Die ersten Spuren – oder besser die ersten Teile – fanden zwei Kohlenhändler: Mr. Henry Wheatley und sein Kollege schoben am frühen Morgen des 5. März 1879 ihren Karren am Themse-Ufer bei Richmond flussaufwärts. Bei der Barnes-Brücke sah Wheatley einen großen schwarzen Behälter im Wasser nahe am Ufer liegen. Er sprang über die Böschung und zog ihn an Land. Es war ein großer, hölzerner Koffer, der mit einem Vorhängeschloss gesichert und mit dicken Seilen verschnürt war. Mit seinem Federmesser schnitt er die Knoten durch und sprengte das Schloss auf. Der Deckel fiel zurück, aber der Inhalt war anders, als Mr. Wheatley sich ihn erwartet und vielleicht auch erhofft hatte: Der Koffer enthielt große Stücke rohes Fleisch, das wahrscheinlich von einem Metzgereibetrieb stammte. Sein Kollege vermutete, dass es sich um Schweinefleisch handelte. Trotzdem waren sich beide ihres Urteils nicht ganz sicher. Warum sollte ein Fleischer Abfälle so sorgfältig entsorgen, indem er sie in einen Koffer packte, diesen fest verschloss und dann in den Fluss warf, wenn er doch einfacher und profitabler feine Wurst daraus erzeugen hätte können?
Die beiden Männer meldeten deshalb ihre Entdeckung auf der nahe gelegenen Polizeistation von Barnes. Inspector Marber brach sofort zur Fundstelle auf und nahm den praktischen Arzt des Ortes, Dr. James Adam, gleich mit. Dem genügte ein kurzer Blick auf die Fundgegenstände der Kohlenhändler, um deren Diagnose in Frage zu stellen. Er war fast hundertprozentig davon überzeugt, Menschenfleisch vor sich zu haben, und ließ den Koffer samt Inhalt zur genaueren Untersuchung ins Gemeindeleichenhaus bringen.
