Es war ein brütend heißer Augusttag in Fall River, Massachusetts. Bridget Sullivan, das irische Dienstmädchen der Familie Borden, ruhte sich gegen 11 Uhr in ihrer Dachbodenkammer von der vormittäglichen Arbeit aus, als sie plötzlich von unten die aufgeregte Stimme der 32-jährigen, noch bei ihren Eltern lebenden Tochter Lizzie hörte: »Komm schnell herunter! Vater ist tot. Irgendjemand muss ins Haus gekommen sein und ihn umgebracht haben!«
Bridget stürmte die Treppe hinunter und wurde an der Tür zum Wohnzimmer bereits von Lizzie erwartet. Als sie einen Blick in den Raum werfen wollte, wo sich ihr Arbeitgeber Adam Borden keine halbe Stunde zuvor zu einem Schläfchen hingelegt hatte, verweigerte ihr Lizzie den Zutritt und wies sie an, über die Straße zu laufen und Dr. Bowen, den Hausarzt der Familie, zu holen. Eine Minute später war das Dienstmädchen wieder da und meldete, dass der Arzt unterwegs sei, aber so schnell wie möglich kommen würde. Die nicht besonders schockiert wirkende Tochter des Verstorbenen beauftragte sie daraufhin, ihre alte Freundin Alice Russell zu holen, damit sie nicht ganz allein im Haus sein müsse.
»Miss Lizzie, wo waren Sie denn, als das passiert ist?«, stellte Bridget daraufhin die Frage, die im Lauf der kommenden Monate noch oft gestellt und höchst unterschiedlich beantwortet werden sollte. »Ich war im Hof und habe ein Stöhnen gehört«, erwiderte Lizzie. »Und als ich dann zum Haus zurückging, stand die Außentür weit offen.«
