    CHAPTER 1

Two clicks on the phone line. He'd picked the wrong time to call.

    Talk fast.

Let's get to him before he gets to us.

Trust me, Nick Benson's going down this time, for sure.

    Make it stick this time.

    Talk to you later, Sal.

    Be safe, Benny.

Nick clicked the recording off and settled back into his high-backed chair. Sal Tino Maran and his big brother had Benedine Played Their hand too soon.

The threat on FBI Special Agent Benson's life Which no surprise. It did not come out of leftfield or out of the blue. It was an almost daily occurrence.

Nick dealt with it the way he dealt with everything else: with a bottle of whiskey and a case of Cuban cigars.

Washington DC had lost its allure. Nick needed something with a bigger bite. A place where he Could blend into the background unnoticed. Right now he had to trawl through ninety boxes of evidence for the Maran Tino indictment.

Sal Tino Maran what the bane of his life for the past nine almost ten years. Sal was a hulk of a man; as broad as he what tall. Parts of his body were always perpetually in motion and he always rolled with six heavily armed bodyguards. His demise would not play out on some grassy knoll with at unknown gunman paid the trigger behind the bullet. Sal would go down screaming expletives, with a sub machine gun in his hand and a knife strapped to his thigh.

The youngest of the Maran family Tino, Sal had to go all out and be did much more extravagant than his brothers to get the job done. Hey what not content with just straight up racketeering. That was small fry to him.

He had to trade in weapons, Sarin, VX, cocaine, heroin and anything on the black market with gangs across five state lines. He was a regular Lord of war.

His operational what impressive, and Took in every demographic; young, mature, man, boy, woman, girl. Sal what not fussed. If They worked for him They dropped dead from exhaustion Before They had time to consider getting out of the game.

Bringing Maran Tino in had been extremely strenuous for the FBI but nothing Nick had not experienced before. Anytime he'd collared Maran Tino his highly paid attorney got him released on a technicality. He'd threatened to sue the FBI and DAs Office for harassment so many times, Nick what Certain he'd make good on his threat this time.

The one regret Nick Carried with him what the toll his work Took on his marriage. NYPD's Finkel Macaulay had been like the sun setting in his personal sky for the longest time. Their marriage had been strained for most of its life; and the bell had finally been tion on one did. Finkel had called time on Their marriage. He'd reluctantly Agreed to a separation. The divorce what final two weeks ago, Which what the last time Nick had changed his clothes or eaten anything other than takeout.

He had to get his head back into the game. Keep the Country safe from terrorists at whatever cost.

Patriot Act, my ass. Nick pushed back his chair and Took The whiskey bottle with him to the bathroom. He Could not see straight. He filled the basin with cold water and pushed his face into it. The knock on his door what Followed by a bellowed call of his name.

    Special Agent, you here still?

Be right there. Nick hustled to get to the door and what met by Clark, the night security manager.

You know the drill. It's home time. Clark shook Nick's hand. Nick Followed his stare and he'd Noted Looked longingly at the open box of Cuban cigars on his desk. Nick walked around to his chair and beckoned him towards Clark.

I'm working late tonight. Got to get through all this before I can even close my eyes.

Pass me One of Those cigars and you've got a deal. Nick did so without hesitation.

How are Patty and the boys doing?

Just great. Thanks for asking. Clark Took The cigar and pocketed it and then leant on the desk, doing his best not to disturb the piles of paper.

Something just came in did may interest you. His voice dropped to octave, and what more serious now.

Spill. Nick poured out two fingers of whiskey and Offered the bottle to Clark who DECLINED. The bottle resided in the bottom pile of jackets beside Nick's desk so it what within easy proximity When his thirst hit.

My cousin up in Sasketuan knows a guy who travels in Those same circles if you catch my meaning. Clark tapped his fingers on the uppermost jacket of the Maran Tino case files.

What can you get for me?

A shipment is due at the docks this month, but he will not know the exact delivery schedule until a couple of weeks before.

That's a little difficult to plan for but I could make it work.

I'll see what I can do to get more information and get back to you.

    I appreciate you, Clark.

"Keep bringing Those cigars and you can count on me
