- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A dozen or so mystery stories by the master. Some strange, some eerie. All wonderful. I love this passage: "...he carried his mouth like a switch knife, ready to squeeze open at the slightest provocation." What wording!!!! Read it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5While I'm a big Ed McBain brief, much of the allure of the novels stems from the familiar characters (the characters at the 87th Precinct or Matthew Hope and his buddies down in Florida) and from the quirky plots that develop as the novels unwind. These short stories don't have either of those luxuries. While they're interesting, they're just so-so.One complaint I had is that there's no way of telling when each story was first published. Clearly, some of them go back to the 50's and 60's when police work was far different than it is now. Society has changed, and so has the law. Attaching dates to each story would have helped provide context.
