For Joan, my friend, my love

    Chapter 1

The day was warm on the Black Sea and the wind blew in from the north over Samsun the busy provincial capital. All along its long coast between two river deltas the apartments, shopping malls, industry and businesses absorbing the wind and freshness the people moved about their activities in normal beauty of the place.

Here in this small sheltered courtyard in Samsun men in black suits with gray ties stood next to the black limousine front and back outside the Blue Mosque quietly with their hands crossed in front each with a bulge under their suit halfway from their waist to their left arm pit. A short fat man named Mustafa Kemal Birdal stood nervously pacing as he waited next to the two bodyguards. A man in a well trimmed beard, a dark blue suit, white shirt and light blue tie emerged from the mosque. He glanced at Mustafa Kemal and then headed to the back seat of the limousine. Mustafa Kemal got into the back seat with the man getting into the back on the opposite side. The limousine sped off as others from the mosque left after evening prayers.

The limo wound down the narrow street toward the Black Sea. This area was fast growing with industry and shopping malls. It was to the east of the main city near the airport and the car and occupants moved unnoticed. At Ataturk Boulevard it turned left and sped off with docks, fishing boats and the quiet sea on the right. The limousine turned off on a narrow access road next to the sea and traveled down the white beaches with European tourists picking up blankets and boxes preparing to leave as the sun sank in the west. They pulled off the street into a park area that was deserted with the exception of an older, dented and rusted blue four-door car. There were three men standing next to the car. Two of the men were Turkish and the third was an elderly European man with his hands tied behind his back. The elderly man shifted back and forth on his feet not holding his weight on his left foot too long. One of the Turkish men held a cane that had a three-footed bottom to provide a stable support for elderly persons.

The four men got out of the limousine with the two bodyguards moving to the right and the left of the group. The two men in the back seat walked directly forward to the three next to the blue car. Mustafa Kemal said, Sie sind der Neffe von Erich Schumann?

The man looked back and forth at the men and said, Yes, I am Kurt Schumann, the nephew of Erich Shumann, but I am not a Nazi and know nothing of the Jewish business, and my uncle was a scientist and knew nothing of it. The two men put their heads close and there was whispering between them.

Mustafa turned to the man and asked, We are looking for a document or package your uncle gave to Hans Reinerth when the two of them met in Bad Buchau on their way to Federsee. This occurred in 1979 and we understand you and another man Abdul Asani, a former member of Muslim Waffen-SS were there also. Do you know what happened to Asani?

Kurt shook his head side to side; After we left Asani went to Ulm and took a train south somewhere.

A car came along the lonely road and the two guards moved close to the man next to Mustafa. One of the men said, Al Hakam Al Adalet, in the car please. The second man drew a gun from under his coat and faced the passing car as Al Hakam was shoved into the car. The car went slowly along the road and past the group on the beach. The sun had almost set and the sky was an orange glow while shadows on the beach were long and dark. Al Hakam got out of the car and returned to the two men holding Kurt Schumann. Al Hakam took the cane from one of the men holding Kurt and held it in both hands, then asked, Did you see the transfer of the package on the trip?

Kurt shook his head from side to side, and Al Hakam took the cane in his right hand by the three-legged bottom and tapped the left leg of Kurt at the knee, which made a little moan in pain. Al Hakam said, As we know, the package was a wooden box with hinges on one side and a hasp on the other. There was a red flower painted on the top of the box. Now again, did you see the transfer of the box? He then swung the cane again this time hitting the man’s knee hard enough to cause a cracking sound.

Kurt screamed and sank so the guards on each side had to hold him up, Bitte aufhören Ich habe Osteoporose .

Al Hakam turned to Mustafa and Mustafa said, He says he has osteoporosis.

Al Hakam turned back and said, I know.

Kurt said, Oh mein Gott .

Al Hakam looked around. There were remains of an old dock leading out to the sea. They consisted of round wooden posts that protruded out of the ground about two feet. There were pairs of the posts that extended out into the water about twenty feet. He looked at the men holding Kurt and said, Drag him over to this post and place his hand on it. When the men had untied his hand in placed it on the post Al Hakam said, So you know I am serious. He struck the index finger of the left hand again causing a scream from Kurt followed by a series of sucking breaths and loud moans. The finger was bent at an angle clearly broken and there was blood oozing out of it.

When Kurt stopped the sucking breathing and was just panting holding his left arm at the wrist with his right, Al Hakam asked, Where exactly did they go and every detail of what they did. What were they wearing? Were they carrying anything else? How long did they take? Did they go anywhere else? Everything you saw to the least detail that you remember.

Kurt moaned and said, They were dressed in suits. Uncle Erich had the box in his hand and Hans had a heavy leather pouch on his shoulder. He stopped to pant. Tears were running down his face, We went to the Museum at Federsee. Hans wanted to show Uncle Erich something in the workroom and told us to look at the displays. They took a long time and we were standing on the walkway watching the fish in the water below when they came back.

Al Hakam nodded and one of the men holding Kurt took his hand and placed back on the post. Al Hakam started to raise the cane again and Kurt said, Bitte warten Bitte warten . When they came out they out Uncle Erich didn’t have the box, but had the heavy leather pouch on his shoulder. Hans had dirt on his pants and he stopped to brush it off. Uncle Erich had heavy gloves on that he put into the pouch. We then went to the Fortress on Cow Mountain. They went inside while we waited outside. I think they went into ah die runden Zimmer, die herausragen links von der Tür .

Mustafa said, He thinks they went into the round room that sticks out of the building to the left of the door.

Kurt said, Yes, yes the light came on in the room after they went into the building. When they came out Uncle Erich dropped the empty leather bag and the heavy gloves in a Müll containre er trash bin.

Al Hakam smiled and said, That is what I wanted to know. In a swift move he raised the cane and struck Kurt’s hand again. Kurt raised his hand and screamed again holding it at the wrist. Al Hakam raised the cane again and struck Kurt on the side of the head cutting the scream abruptly off. Kurt collapsed with his head bleeding. One of the men dropped to one knee placing a finger on Kurt’s throat then nodded to Al Hakam.

Al Hakam said, Use his belt to tie him to the last pole out in the water, and push him under. He turned and walked toward the car.

Two weeks later in UN Headquarters the Office of the UN Protocol on Cultural Preservation was quiet. It is a small office with no windows, two desks, and a filing cabinet. Warren Oats the Director was at the desk away from the door. His brown suit was unbuttoned. When he stood he could button it but there was an obvious crease at an angle upward from the button indicating his slight overweight stature. Fran Weaver a thin woman with short brown hair sat at the second desk behind a computer screen in front of the door.

Jack came into Warren office, and Warren said, Jack how have you been?

Jack grumbled, Bored. Since you won’t let me go out to my job, Public Affairs has me answering letters to grade school kids wanting to know about the UN. The good thing is I get to stay home with my wife and kid.

Warren said, Well Jack the places where member states need help protecting their antiquities are in the middle east and we would kind of like you to keep your head about you.

Jack looked over at his secretary Fran Weaver who was smirking at him and he asked, And?

Fran said, Well maybe Public Affairs felt you would relate easily to grade school kids.

Jack was about to make rude gesture when Warren said, The office that supports the Committee on Disarmament and International Security needs someone to look into something and they don’t have anyone they can send. They asked if they could borrow you. They said it was not in any conflict areas. I guess Colonel Markku recommended you.

Jack said, I don’t know if that is good or bad. My relations with Markku is kind of like two dogs circling and smelling each other before a fight. Jacks thought was, Markku is military first and always.

Colonel Markku is from Norway and is used to interface between member state military units and the UN. He is in his forties, thin muscular, tall, blonde, and wearing his uniform looks starched enough to break into pieces if he was struck in the correct place.

Warren said, Well in any case go over and see what it is about. You don’t have to take the assignment unless you want to. He paused and handed Jack a piece of paper, It is a Mr. Carsten Kellar. Here is his room number.

Jack went up and over to the room which was much like Warren’s, small no windows, room for a two desks, three filing cabinets and a conference table and a couple of chairs.

When he entered he turned to Kellar’s desk, but the secretary a Nixie Lang by her nameplate said, How can we help you? Nixie must have weighed all of a hundred and ten pounds, shoulder length blonde hair, a blouse slightly tight that must have turned even the diplomats heads and a positive, I will brook no attitude and voice.

Jack said, My name is Jack Wellington and I was sent by the Office of the UN Protocol on Cultural Preservation to see Mr. Kellar.

Mr. Kellar stood and said, Ah Mr. Wellington, I am Carsten. Please have a seat. I understand you have done some assignments for Mr. Oats and have represented the UN well. We need someone to look into something. Kellar in his fifties with a slight German accent had only about ten pounds on Nixie.

Jack took a seat in the chair between the secretary’s desk and Kellar’s desk. Kellar said, This office supports the First Committee, the Committee on Disarmament and International Security. We don’t normally send people out to look at activities in our area, member states usually do that and just send us a report.

He hesitated for a moment then continued, "There are some people we take note of when they appear in reports because they did something in the past to effect our mission area. There was a man found dead in the Black Sea that appeared to have been tortured. The man himself was elderly, a former Gymnasium teacher from Moosburg Germany named Kurt Schumann and generally just a common individual. However the man was the great grandson of the classical composer Robert Schumann and also the nephew of Erich Schumann who worked on Germany’s Manhattan Project, he paused.

Jack said, You’re kidding me. You don’t sit around tracking old Nazis do you?

Kellar smiled and said, "No, not normally, but sometimes you hear something and it touches something deep in your memory and you say to yourself I wonder if this or that could occur. But anyway, the man’s Uncle Erich specialized in acoustics and explosives. He was a general officer in
