A Sociological Exploration of Antidepressants

About this ebook
Mental health is a hot topic, including treatment for mental illness. In this essay, I approach antidepressants in a sociological fashion. The dimensions I consider include: general information, the statistics of antidepressant usage, how antidepressants relate to the medical model, the efficacy of antidepressants, and how antidepressants can be understood through sociological frameworks.

I am a quasi-autonomous writer and music maker. My interests regarding writing include sociology (social control, mental health), philosophy (ethics, metaphysics, existentialism), and religion (Christianity). I am also an undergraduate student at the University of Saskatchewan, where I'm working toward a B.A. in sociology with a minor in philosophy. In addition to academic pursuits, I also enjoy writing creative prose and poetry, free from the boundaries of formal research. I am in the process of publishing some essays here and perhaps even a poetry book. As for music, I create instrumental electronic and experimental rock under the names Dalama Jones and STILTS (both of which can be found on Bandcamp).

A Sociological Exploration of Antidepressants - Azure Ides-Grey
Introduction
In this paper, I will be questioning drug therapy for depression and anxiety (put simply, antidepressants). Many implications of the topic shall be discussed. These include: general information, the statistics of antidepressant usage, how antidepressants relate to the medical model, the efficacy of antidepressants, and how antidepressants can be understood through sociological frameworks. These frameworks include: structural-functionalism, conflict theory, and social constructionism. The purpose of this essay is to understand the cultural, physical, and theoretical aspects of antidepressants.
General Remarks
I would like to begin by looking at some of the main treatments available for depression and anxiety.
