Chapter 1
Obitus
The crescent moon hung in an otherwise empty ink-black sky, casting its silver rays over a stately manor. In the distance the sounds of a stirring ocean played gently in the cold night air. The wind stirred, sending a ripple through Obitus’s robes as he surged up the marble-strewn lane flanked by high hedges, his face taut with rage. The blue of his robes played in and out of view in the light from the moon.
Obitus’s slim fingers coiled like little snakes around a long wand. The mint green of its body was mottled black from dense base to reedy tip. A witch burst from the hedge just up ahead, wand raised, and shouted. "Mortifico!" but her words were lost to the wind as Obitus’s curse struck her in the chest. She shot backwards through the air. Hit the ground with a crunch and deep, almost grunted exhalation. She fell still, her front splayed open exposing the splintered bones of her chest plate. Blood as black as the sky above streamed from the wound. Obitus stopped, and with a bare foot maneuvered her face towards him. It was a mask of shock. Little spatters of blood dotted her narrow face. Her blue eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and shock.

Obitus muttered under his breath, I’m insulted.
A gas light flared on. Obitus jerked his head in its direction and watched as a generously-sized front porch blazed into view. Out into the night poured a stream of silhouetted figures. This brought a smile to his face.
He raised his wand. "Inardesco!" he yelled. Flames leapt from his wand, spitting and roaring as if from the mouth of a dragon. The flames caught and those who had fled from the house went up in flames. The air became saturated with the smell of burning clothes and flesh. Screams rent the air, yelps that sounded like wounded animals.
"Adscendo Corporis!" Obitus yelled.
The burning men and women rose into the air. The fire that was their burning bodies formed into a sphere, licking and spitting
