    "They're heeere, Jeremy hissed in her ear; his breath hot against her cheek. Wake up, Katy, the bears are here!"

    Katy tried to pull the sheet over her head, but Jeremy was kneeling on it and it wouldn't budge.

    They can't be here yet, she complained. It's too early.

    It's not early, he said scornfully. "I've already been down to the store to get Uncle Brice his paper. That's how I know they're here. I saw one."

    Oh, you did not, Katy said crossly.

    Her brother never let her sleep in the morning—and their mom thought it was some kind of virtue that he got up with the first ray of dawn. Try keeping him awake past nine at night, though, she thought sourly. Just when the day started to get interesting, Jeremy was yawning in his jammies, while Katy, energized by starlight, had to be forced into bed by ten.

    I did, too, Jeremy said, it was yellow, with flowers painted on it. He bounced, making the bed springs creak. "Come on, Katy! Uncle Brice says he'll take us 'round town so we can see them all! It's seven-thirty and you're not even up yet!"

    Like the bears were going to be gone if they didn't get downtown til noon, Katy thought. Not that Jeremy had any intentions of letting her go back to sleep. She sighed and sat up, pushing the covers back.

    OK, I'm up, she snarled. Get out of here so I can get dressed.

    Bears! Jeremy burbled, skipping ahead. How many bears are in this city?
