Chapter One

1874

New Orleans, Louisiana

Robert sat at his small desk trying to enjoy his book of Lord Byron’s poetry. The leather bound book had become worn and faded. He’d read it so many times he knew most of the prose by heart. Today it failed to inspire him or offer even a modicum of comfort.

He hadn’t lived in a long time—eight years to be exact. While still flesh and blood he felt like a ghost. Slowly his humanity had been stripped away leaving him a shell of his former self. It hurt to think of his boyhood days. He’d had so many hopes and dreams.

His father has crushed his future, destroyed it beyond repair like the fire had destroyed their mansion. Thankfully they’d fled to safety before the Yankees torched the place.

Although some days were so painful he wondered if being burned would have better a better fate. Terrible to think, he knew. Dying would have spared him the pain, humiliation, and heartache. Or if he had survived scarred flesh would have saved him from his current profession.

No one wanted to spend the night with a scarred man. They wanted to see a man of refinement, a fallen dandy.

His stomach churned. It despised him the more he thought about it. Eight long years of servicing men.

In the early days, he’d dreamed of a way out. He’d told himself that he’d do what he had to do in order to survive but some day he’d escape this rotten life and regain his freedom. As he grew older and more experienced in the art of sex he realized that day would likely never come.

It hurt too much to think about it.

Freedom. Such a hollow word. Now he knew what his father’s slaves had felt toiling their lives away in the cotton fields. Each day was just like the next painful and miserable.

He no longer pleaded with God to rescue him from this life. He was too soiled for rescuing now. The best he could do was to be a kept man. So he prayed that one day a client would take a shine to him and rescue him from the brothel.

He’d only live with the man if he could love him. He knew what it was like to bend over and feel empty as a man took him from behind.
