    Orienteer

    By Clémence Roche

    The pillow case was soaked.

X tossed and turned, not waking but feeling the bracing discomfort as he lay surrounded by a cool blanket he couldn’t shake, like ice cubes floating and bobbing around in a long summer’s drink. In fact he was struggling to find his way. He could smell a heaviness that he remembered from walking through muddy fields where livestock had passed. His eyes adapted to the darkness not ever focussing which caused him to trip up notwithstanding his height, grazing himself, hitting his forehead against a rough texture.

Was this a cave or some unknown space? Why am I here? he questioned.

He noticed he was struggling to breathe but as he continued, he regained his rhythm but not his assurance.
