*Excerpt from LIGHTS, CAMERA, BACKGROUND! The Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Background Actor in Atlanta and Other Southern Cities
*About the Author
Introduction
I am in love with acting! I mean completely head over heels, totally in love and it just so happens that I live in Atlanta, Georgia. Come to find out, Atlanta is a prime area for all things acting and all things film and TV related. It is now number three in film production in the United States, behind California and New York. Yes, Atlanta has claimed the title of Hollywood of the South.
That being said, there are many people who currently live and are currently flocking to Atlanta to get involved in the film industry. I know because I have seen them. I am an actor, and I meet countless new actors weekly as well as aspiring and current crew members and other industry professionals.
With the state’s tax incentive, productions have come calling to Georgia. On July 9, 2015 a press release was issued where Georgia Governor, Nathan Deal announced that 248 feature films and TV shows were produced during the 2015 fiscal year, and $6 billion was generated in economic growth for Georgia (to read the entire press release visit: http://gov.georgia.gov/).
The movie industry is alive and well in Atlanta, and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Pinewood Atlanta Studios, EUE/Screen Gems, Turner Studios, Tyler Perry Studios are just a few studios that are up and running. And there are plenty more soon to come including: Atlanta Media Campus and Studio, Eagle Rock Studios Atlanta, Atlanta Metro Studios, and an expansion of Tyler Perry Studios to Fort McPherson, a former army base.
I for one have loved watching Georgia’s film industry grow and flourish. I have been acting in Atlanta for several years now and have realized that due to the surge and constant activity in the film business a resource book exclusively focusing on the Atlanta film market was needed and would be appreciated and useful to many actors.
The following are just a few questions that I hope this book will be able to answer:
• Where can I go to get a self-taped audition?
• Who are the casting directors who cast most projects in the southeast?
• What acting classes come highly recommended?
• Who are the legit talent agents who won’t try to scam me
