About this ebook

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is the central text of the Christian Science religion. It was written by Mary Baker Eddy, inspired by studies of the Bible she undertook in 1867 following a healing experience. Science and Health posits a wholly metaphysical view of Christianity in which sin, disease, and death are not of God, and are therefore not real. Further, it suggests that by striving toward a spiritual understanding of the world as God's perfect creation, these "false beliefs" are shed from one's experience.

Now I understand where the theology of modern prosperity and health/wealth and word-faith gospels come from. Mary Baker Eddy states in several places that sin, or evil, is a lie, it's unreal like in 470:12-18. To her, evil only exists when we manifest it in our mind, that the only thing that is real is God. This means we manifest disease and death and have the power to make it disappear by speaking it out of existence. So in essence, we can become God by adjusting our Mind. By eliminating the existence of evil, it eliminates the reality of the fall and sin. It means we don't need a Savior and we can save ourselves, that by thinking or speaking a certain way, we can be just like God and have physical healing. Sounds a lot like a certain lie told to Eve in the garden of Eden, promising heaven but delivering hell. Also sounds a lot like scientology, they too claim they can heal their own bodies because they know the secrets of the universe, you just have to acquire enough wealth/influence first to be deemed worthy to receive it.

Hmm, if all these people claim they have the ability and authority to do what God does, how come they all age and die? They should be able to resurrect their body cells and live forever and never have to eat or drink to nourish their physical bodies. If Elisha had a double portion of Elijah's blessings and could perform all those miracles, why did he get sick and die? If evil isn't real and sin isn't real, then there was never a reason for a Messiah. I find it interesting the Mary Baker Eddy rarely ever cites the Bible verses she uses. So unless you had the Bible memorized back in the 1800s, you wouldn't know she it taking nearly all of them out of context to suit her theologies. I hope before the end she truly repented because there really is a lake of fire waiting for all of us because of our sins and only turning to the real Jesus Christ can we received that gift of salvation, of escape. By downplaying sin as all these wolves in sheep's clothing do, it puts the focus on worldly, earthly things and everything becomes about us and what we desire here in this world. This is the true enlightenment that it seems Mary Baker Eddy never found:

John 3:16-21 (NIV): 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

Romans 3:23-26(NIV): 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
