    Chapter One

The doors to the meeting room loomed ahead. Eli suppressed a shudder. Waiting inside was the Alpha of the Crescent Valley pack together with his two enforcers...Steven Wood could also be Eli’s potential mate.

Are you sure about this, son? asked Morgan Stone, Eli’s father.

His father grabbed Eli’s shoulder a couple of steps before entering the room. Usually, his father wore a different mask in public than in private. As Alpha of their pack, he had to. Now however, Eli could see the man he spoke to was his dad.

Eli straightened his shoulders. His fear must have shown on his face. He knew he was lucky than most male Omegas. Some of the stories he heard about unclaimed male Omegas being traded and taken like breeding prizes made him cringe.

Omegas were born, not made. He knew his father and the rest of the Greystone Hills pack leaders had expected the birth of a second Alpha, someone to strengthen the pack.  Instead, they got him instead.

Eli’s mother died giving birth to him. Another Alpha would have given away, used him as a bargaining chip the moment he came of age. Eli knew his pack barely tolerated his presence. Often, his father’s Beta and Gamma reminded him how lucky he was that his father had one soft spot—him.

I— Eli began. He was about to tell his dad he changed his mind, but he saw their pack Beta and Gamma trade looks.

He knew what the two men would say, that he was a coward who didn’t give a damn about their pack. Hunters had been running loose in their territory for some time now. Their pack wasn’t particularly powerful or strong. They fought for survival. That was why his dad took a new mate and husband from another pack—to form new alliances.

Anton, his father’s new mate and husband, stepped forward. By pack laws, Anton had to fight his way to earn a position in the pack, but to honor their alliance his father made Anton one of the pack enforcers. Eli didn’t know why his skin crawled every time Anton neared him. He also didn’t like the fact his father’s Beta and Gamma started looking to Anton for orders whenever his father wasn’t around to deal with pack politics.

How Anton won over the hearts of the two scarred warriors, Eli never knew. He supposed every werewolf pack valued strength and power. Anton embodied all those traits. Like his father and the other pack leaders, Anton kept himself in tip shape despite nearing his forties. Anton also bought over his two sons from a former marriage into the pack, and both were similarly dominant wolves. What was worse, Anton wasn’t just opportunistic, but charismatic as well. He knew how to wield words like weapons.

Morgan, we’ve already talked about this, remember? Anton asked, ignoring Eli completely.

Eli avoided looking into anyone’s eyes. At twenty-one, he was still awkward as he’d been since he was a teenager. No matter what he did, he still maintained the slender body shape and looks he inherited from his mother. Small wonder the pack didn’t see him other than someone to be picked on.

I know we did, but ultimately, this is Eli’s decision, his father answered.

Eli met his father’s grin and reluctantly smiled. Every time life took a turn for the worse, he always knew he could pull through. No one could ask for a better father. Instead of discarding him, Morgan contested and fought for Eli to remain in the pack. Thanks to his dad, he’d lived a relatively comfortable life. Most Omegas didn’t.

He took a deep breath. This alliance was important to his father. Besides, his father had repeatedly stressed to him that no one was forcing him to mate a man he didn’t get along with.

It’s fine. I’m ready, Eli said.

That’s right. Eli also knows what best for the pack, right? Anton asked, looking at him.

Eli swallowed, nodding. He wondered sometimes if Anton saw him as an actual person, or merely a pawn. Eli never really understood what his father saw in the other man. They were affectionate enough, but in the end, it was a marriage of convenience. If his father could do it for
