Before becoming a patch in the Hellhounds MC, Mercy was a healer and a lover. Now Mercy’s bent, not broken, a beast living in the skin of the man. Prologue
Ten Years Ago
One day at a time,
Derek Warner muttered under his breath.
Dismayed, he glanced at the laces of his boots, his fingers shaking. Why couldn’t he get a simple knot done? Each day playing this charade took plenty from him. When he first started out, Derek had been naive, full of ideals, not expecting reality to rear its ugly head.
When news of the existence of the paranormal existence broke out, Derek had just obtained his medical license. He hid away his wolf, not realizing by concealing his beast, he became a half shadow. When the Coalition asked for professional volunteers to spy on the T-11 government project, he didn’t hesitate or think.
Sheer willpower made him come to work each day, despite the horrors he witnessed on a daily basis. The humans believed the T-11 could target the specific cells in any paranormal being’s body. They frequently conducted tests on live specimens, and Derek saw the effects of the drug firsthand, how it broke down the strongest and turned them to whimpering, broken things.
Good morning, Doctor,
a voice purred, yanking Derek out from the hellhole his mind trapped him in.
Derek’s head snapped up to see his boyfriend leaning against the doorway leading to their shared bedroom. Realizing James wore nothing and the fact James’s erect dick stood rock hard and ready for some morning action, Derek flushed.
You shouldn’t be strutting around the apartment like that,
Derek said, clearing his throat.
Having a human lover secured his cover. James also provided ample distraction when Derek’s thoughts turned to dark roads when his animal half saw no other solution than to sink their canines into an unsuspecting human throat.
Grin on his handsome face, James sauntered to him. Without another word, he sat on Derek’s lap, wrapping his arms around his neck. James worked the pole for a living, but this private dance was all for Derek. Derek used one hand to support James’s back, the other to clasp the back of his neck and bring him close for a kiss. The sweet taste and heat of James flooded down his throat. The close contact of flesh, of James’s alluring scent, drove his wolf mad with lust. Derek’s cock strained against the thin material of his scrubs, demanding equal attention.
James, Derek mused, had been the one good thing in his life. James tethered Derek back to reality, reminded Derek of the cause the Coalition worked toward—a future where being human or other didn’t matter. His relationship with James proved that. His friends kept reminding Derek to trend carefully. Kept reminding Derek humans weren’t to be trusted, but by then, Derek had fallen hard and fast for his human. Nothing wrong with looking forward to seeing James’s face at the end of each horrid day, but how would James react once he learned the truth?
James said he belonged on the neutral side of the fence, but Derek hadn’t been too sure about trusting James with his secret. James didn’t know what exactly Derek’s role had been in the T-11 project, and Derek planned to keep it that way. Sooner or later, though, James would start asking questions. Revealing himself, however, would compromise the entire operation.
Derek released James’s lips.
Thinking deep thoughts so early in the morning? You should learn to relax, baby,
James teased.
Plenty of things to do at work.
James snorted and then wiggled his eyebrows suggestively at Derek. You’re always busy, stuck in that lab of yours running tests. Why don’t you make some time for me one of these days? Take me out to a nice dinner, and then we can catch a show.
Guilt tugged at Derek’s heartstrings. When Derek didn’t take an extra shift at the labs, he attended Coalition meetings, leaving James alone at home. Pretty soon, the human would start to lose interest, and James had no idea he was Derek’s last link to the sane world.
How about I make it up to you?
Derek asked, wary when James’s hand found its way to the bulge in his scrubs.
How about now?
James asked with a smirk.
God, Derek knew he shouldn’t let James string him around like this, but he couldn’t help it. Sometimes he wondered why James would choose him when he could have anyone else.
Tempting offer, but Derek couldn’t afford to be late. Derek grabbed James’s hand, aware of James’s pulse speeding up, the combination of fear and excitement tempting him. It would be so easy to command James on his knees and watch James use that talented mouth of his. Sorry, James. Rain check. Yes to the date, though.
Tracing circles on his chest, James’s eyes widened. Really?
Derek nodded. I’ll pick you up after your shift at the club.
Squealing, James wrapped his arms around Derek for a hug. It didn’t help Derek’s horny wolf when James nuzzled his neck, warm breath tickling against his ear. Then, I’ll see you later, Doctor.
Hopping off his lap, James walked him to the door.
James,
Derek began, clearing his throat, meeting James’s vivid blue eyes. I’m sorry for neglecting you. I promise to make it up to you.
James let out a sexy chuckle. Oh, you bet. I’m going to think of creative and naughty ways of repayment.
Ushered out of his apartment, Derek walked to his car. Without James’s proximity to brighten his day, dread settled back in his stomach. He drove, mind wandering aimlessly. Derek steered the car out of the city and onto the highway until the vehicles thinned and dry desert rose on either side of him. As he neared the military base, Derek fumbled in his glove compartment for his ID. Odd. Sweat broke on his forehead when the soldier on guard duty demanded identification. His fingers found nothing.
Hold on a second, it’s right here.
Derek tried to sound harried and annoyed, tried not to let the panic show in his voice.
Relax, nothing’s wrong. Still, the notion of being discovered and being thrown in next to the other specimens made his hands clammy and his heart race. Derek knew the risks when he took up this job, but the thought of a slow and painful death in a cage scared him shitless. Besides, if he did get caught, what would happen to James?
Christ, they’d go after James, to whatever mattered most to Derek. That was how they kept their specimens in control. Take a lover, a wife, a cub, and anyone would bend and eventually break apart.
That’s Dr. Warner, we see him pass by every morning, Jones,
said the soldier next to the first. Derek finally found his ID on the floor of the seat next to him. Odd.
Here you go,
Derek said, handing it
