Stars, Saucers and Dreamtime - Maggie Maxwell
Early Dreaming
I was born in the 1950’s to very open minded parents who said things to me like, We see things because they reflect light, there could be many things that don’t reflect light...
. This, of course, kept me thinking and questioning things throughout my childhood. I grew up with black and white television, watching The Outer Limits
and The Twilight Zone
. We were delighted to be invited to our neighbor’s home when they got one of the first color TV’s and we all sat on the floor watching Star Trek
. I remember the episode; Kirk was being chased through caves and passages by a giant, scary man. The color was set way too strong, everything was day glow
, but we loved it. My father promptly got a screen cover for our TV that was tinted in pinks, greens and blues to create the illusion of the color TV. It looked as good to me as the neighbors’ overly gaudy set looked.
As a very small child, my life revolved around our pets. The dogs were my best friends and I had a herd
of imaginary horses. I told my Mom, They just don’t reflect light
. Horses were my passion from the beginning. They were different from all other beings – almost other worldly in their sensitivity, beauty and kindness toward humanity.
I was in love with all living things. I remember accidentally killing a small moth that was on the sliding glass door. I had wanted to see it better and tried to pick it up. I crushed it. I cried for hours and no one could calm me. Later, I’m told, I was trying to look at ants with a magnifying glass and they just kept moving away. They say that I got paper and crayons, drew some ants and then looked at them through the magnifying glass.
I remember playing with imaginary
friends. I remember seeing orbs in our house. The first house I lived in was partly designed for my brother and me. One wall of our bedroom was slate so we were allowed to draw on that wall all we wished, with multi-colored chalks. In
