    A French writer born in Algeria in 1908, Robert Merle arrived in France in 1918. Having studied English literature, he taught in various high schools and worked as a translator for Gallimard until 1939, when he was enrolled and became a translator for the English troops based in Dunkerque. He was taken prisoner in Germany until 1943, and upon his return to France, he wrote his first novel, Death is My Trade (1952), a testimony of Dunkerque’s fiasco.

    Although Robert Merle’s work is as rich as it is diversified (news stories, plays, essays, thriller novels, etc.), the author is most widely known for his historical novels: between 1978 and 2003, he published
