The Devil Came Down to Georgia

Many people have heard of St. Simon’s Island in Georgia but not so many have heard of Sea Island. Sea Island is next to St. Simon’s Island and it is where all the rich people live. If you were on Sea Island today you would see a tall handsome man standing at the end of the beach. The man wasn’t there a minute ago but you wouldn’t know that because you wouldn’t have been looking in that direction.

The man has a look of Antonio Banderas about him, the lean dark look of a man from southern Spain. A handsome man, with a blend of European and Moor in him from the days one thousand years ago when the Arabs ruled Spain. He’s dressed in black trousers with a checked shirt and his shoes shine as if someone’s worked on them all night. They’re the wrong shoes for the beach but the man doesn’t seem to mind.

There’s something odd about this man on the beach but as you watch him you can’t make out what it is. The man looks around and then he sniffs the air. He sniffs again and then satisfied, he turns and walks down the beach. You’re curious so you turn yourself and you begin to follow the man down the beach. There’s a vague sense of unease in you and you know you shouldn’t follow him but at the same time there is a sense of excitement, an excitement that you haven’t felt in your seventeen years on this Earth.

Further down the beach a man sits on the deck. The man’s name is Christopher Ashley and he is surrounded by his family. His home is easily a million-dollar home, Christopher Ashley enjoys the trappings of success. It wasn’t always that way, there was a time when Ashley was grindingly poor, the kind of horrible poverty that you can only find in an inner city slum. That slum is a million miles away now. It is almost fifteen years since Ashley paid less than one thousand dollars for a suit. There’s a problem though, Christopher Ashley’s destiny was to stay in that slum. Twenty-one years ago Ashley made a bargain with the man walking down the beach. Only when Ashley made the bargain the creature that sat opposite him wasn’t a man.

Further up the beach the man sniffs the air again. The scent is stronger now and the man lengthens his stride. As he walks he passes more and more houses all with seven figure price tags. Most of these houses are second homes owned by people from the north.

A woman sits and looks out over the water. She watches the Atlantic as the surf pounds the beach. She has everything material that a woman could ever want but she isn’t happy. Her name is Mary Isan and long ago she did a very bad thing. The man inside the house, the man who is now her husband once loved another girl called Susan. Susan was the only woman Carl has ever really loved but one night they argued. It was a bad argument and Susan told Carl she never wanted to see him again. The next day she gave Mary a letter to give to Carl but Mary never delivered it. Mary wanted Carl for herself and she kept the couple apart for six weeks until the day that Susan committed suicide. Devastated, Carl turned to Mary for support and one year later they were married. Carl is the perfect husband, far better than Mary deserves but there is one problem with Carl. About once a month, Carl cries out in his sleep for Susan. It is a mournful wailing sound, almost as if his soul is crying for what it has lost. In the morning Carl never remembers and Mary has never told him. There is something wrong with Mary because she should feel guilt for what she has done but all she feels is irritation. Irritation, that after all these years Carl still feels for his lost love. Right now Mary is feeling irritated because last night Carl cried out in his sleep.

    Mary’s strong emotions
