Curtis W. Jackson

Curtz Jackson is a screenwriter of modern and period films involving close interactions. He is earning his BFA in Creative Writing for Entertainment at Full Sail University. He studied Graphic Design and assisted as a film extra on movie and television sets. His last feature was We Only Know So Much (2018, Director, Donal Lardner Ward).Mr. Jackson authored the short pictorial drama of a man’s end-of-life decision, One Blue Eye Jake’s Twilight Boardwalk (2020, Blurb Books), and published photo essays such as Late Afternoon in the Hop and Bark Park (2019, Lulu.com). He’s the novelist of Waiting for Regina (2017, Barnes and Noble Press) and the humor artist of 57 Sections: A Book of Cartoons. In the mid-1990s, Mr. Jackson was a freelance cartoonist and street caricature artist.

A Prelude in Thought of Line Swirling Portraiture

It was a hot afternoon day in 1997 summer of Strasburg, Virginia where I was living in an apartment residence. It felt cooler to go outside than enduring the humidity in the second story room without an air conditioner and with insufficient plugged in fans. There I was on the side, seeing the Strasburg Road (Route 55, Virginia) positioned from the baking mud, gravel surface parking lot bordered by a lawn of green grass enjoying the weather much so than me. A middle-aged Caucasian couple was arriving in a white auto. I do not recall for what reason; maybe they were seeking driving directions or visiting another tenant.

My memory is helping me to visualize the blonde-haired woman sitting on the passenger side of the auto. Affected by the heat or a long drive she appeared thirsty. I asked the couple if they wanted something, water to drink. The husband said no, his spouse was gladly welcoming it. Going up the stairs to the apartment I did fetch the cool, clear glass of water and brought it to her, she expressed her gratitude. Then they were leaving heading into Front Royal. It could not have been a protracting time after, I looked down to my feet in the residence parking area spotting something mostly covered by mud with a thick paper like corner sticking out.

Picking it up by the frayed edge some of the dried mud began to come off revealing a photograph of a smiling woman with dark sunglasses wearing a white t-shirt and a pale color baseball cap. The picture was button clicked by maybe one of her relatives or friends of her sitting in an automobile; it might have been a previous day breeze that blown the image into the parking area before the summer rains. I brought the photo to the apartment and gently cleaned it. The person in the picture did not at all looked familiar to me.

Nonetheless, I took the liberty of drawing her cartoon portrait basing from the photo and later using the drawing for an advertising flyer; this incentive is my regret for she was not there to give permission. Her name unknown to me I called her Molly. Here in this section, you see the result of that drawing. It was during the time I was working two jobs trying to make ends meet economically. The thought of once again resuming caricature drawing for adding income circulated in my mind. It was less easy to weigh in the lack of profit of years before in New York; I was indeed yearning of coping better with the cost of living. My apologies to you readers I have lost the photo to share with you, we still do have the drawing. A picture amidst the lined art collected for this book.

Who is Wayne Koehler? He was among numerous individuals I was drawing caricatures from varying publications, his source photo is likely from the Winchester Star newspaper, circa 1998. In response to what he is saying in the picture Wayne could had been a motorcycle enthusiast, a personal detail I probably read about in the newspaper column or article. Wayne may still be a resident of Warren Country, Virginia along with his family, friends, his dog, goldfish or cat, his neighbors, work associates or congregation members. Acme Sales is a fictional company.

Bingham Parkinson may still be a leading official at Jacksonville Airport Authority; this ink brush portrait was drawn between 2004 and 2005.
