The plane cut across the Pacific coast, heading south towards my destination at LAX. Forests gave way to cities and back again as the plane made its smooth trip through the sky. Even our touchdown was without bumps or jolts and I watched as the passengers around me clapped for our skilled pilots.

Despite the happiness around me I put on an oversized pair of sunglasses that my mother had given me before the journey. I’d rather block out those around me than join in, especially since I was making a not so wanted move to a new state.

It had all started a few weeks earlier. The company I was working for had suddenly taken a dive in the markets and that meant the extra weight had to go. That was me, along with a couple others, and I quickly became just another unemployed graphic designer.

My parents, concerned for my mental health, had decided that the best thing for me was going to LA to visit my aunt for a while. The sun would do me good, or at least they insisted that it would. So, at twenty-four, I left Seattle for LA, though not under my own desire.

I wasn’t cut out for LA. Los Angeles was the city of beautiful people, of thin people, and I wouldn’t fit in. An overweight girl like myself didn’t exactly mesh with the perfectly tanned bodies of the California dream.

I’d visited my Aunt Tammy a few times since she’d moved to California, but last year she bought a house in a new high end development right along the coast between LA and San Diego and it would be my first time visiting the new place. I guess ‘visit’ really wasn’t the right word for it. Temporarily living there was a bit more accurate. Trapped there was even more precise.
