About this ebook

This book is an attempt to introduce Muslim youth in particular and mankind in general to the world of knowledge that sprang from the teachings of the Qur’an and influenced human studies and culture in diverse ways that led to scientific inventions and growth of knowledge in the Muslim world between the 7th and 14th centuries and brought about the Renaissance in Europe and introduced the Europeans to the fundamental elements [i.e. knowledge enquiry, reasoning and freedom], which opened the door for modern scientific inventions. The Qur’an clearly establishes the fact that Science and the Qur’an are two aspects of the same truth and there is no contradiction between them. The first revelation of the Qur’an inspired the Prophet of Islam to acquire knowledge and emphasised life [96: 1-5]. It also advised him to pray to Allah for increase in knowledge [20:114], because they observe and see signs and attributes of Allah both in the Qur’an and in the material universe. They reflect, think and understand the parable of the Qur’an and His manifestations all around them and draw right and beneficial conclusions from them [29:43].

DEDICATION

I dedicate this Book, in its entirety to Mr. Shawki Fatal- the General Manager of METRO TV for his support and encouragement in bringing this monumental work to its final stage. May Allah bless him and his family immensely.

PREFACE

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. And He [Allah] taught Adam -the name of all things [2: 31]. And He taught man that which he knew not [96: 5].

The Qur’an makes it abundantly clear that the whole material structure is full of His signs but only men of knowledge observe and understand them. The Qur’an invites these men to mediate on it and His creation.

Thus, the Qur’an introduces new dimensions into the studies of religion and seeks to bring men of knowledge [Scientists] closer to Allah through the study of His attributes and manifestations in the material world.

We hope and pray this book will initiate and encourage investigation and research and lead to the revival of scientific knowledge among the

Millet-e-Islamia as it did in the early period of the Islamic history.

SHEIKH AHMED MOHAMMED AWAL.

INTRODUCTION

Any book that claims to be from God must be free from contradiction when measured against established contemporary science. The knowledge of the Qur’an and scientific facts are two of the same truth.

The Qur’an was revealed in the 7 century, the epoch of mythology, superstitions and idolatry. Yet, not a single whimsical phrase of superstition has been found to be in the Qur’an. Surely many books were written during the time of the Qur’anic revelation, but non share the distinction of purity like the Qur’an. To the Muslim, Science and religion are inseparable, but science is a progressive venture discarding from theory and making room for others, until it becomes concrete and accepted. The Qur’an on the source of all knowledge, coming from the fountain–head of divine nectar [Lauhil-mahfuz], the preserved tablets.

The Qur’an is not a scientific book per-se; it is first and foremost a Book of guidance and a comprehensive teaching of the relationship between man and his Lord, his environment, his fellow humans and animals, and environment at large. The Qur’an has presented an array of knowledge and information on many subjects and which some are made manifest in today’s technology, leaving scientists scrambling to offer explanation as to how could a text written in the 7th century will contain information of the 21st century.

To quote from Maurice Bucaille, a scientist, surgeon and philosopher, an eminent French citizen, and the autor of [The Qur’an, The Bible and Science] TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE VERSES THAT DEAL WITH SCIENCE IN THE QUR’AN, ONE IS REQUIRED TO HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY ENCYCLOPAEDIC KNOWLEDGE, by which I mean, [ONE WHICH EMBRACES VERY MANY DECIPLINE] no man can do that, therefore where could Mohammed developed this ideas from? The answer is God Almighty taught him [please indicate page no.]

Allah says in the Qur’an 17:88,

IF THE WHOLE OF MANKIND AND JINN WERE TO COME TOGETHER TO PRODUCE THE LIKE OF THE QUR’AN, THEY COULD NOT PRODUCE THE LIKE THERE OF, EVEN IF THEY HELPED ONE ANOTHER.

The Qur’an also invited mankind to view the heavens if there are any disproportions and flaws. The Qur’an challenged man the chance of going to the heaven and penetrates in the depth of the earth. The humble writer sees all this as a formula given to us by Allah to research and analyse the environment for our benefit here on earth and in the hereafter. In this book, we shall attempt to discuss issues that science has accepted and then analyse some Qur’anic verses dealing with those disciplines. My sole purpose is to share knowledge with my brethren. I ask that the reader forgives me for any mistakes of interpretation or otherwise, if the reader finds any flaws and mistakes in my analyses, they are mine alone. The
