Because of Cam - Wanika Fazekas

    Bad Hair Day

    ––––––––

Cameron saw my vagina, and we haven't had sex. Yet.

My phone pings. I pull it out of my back pocket and check for messages.

    CAMERON: Good morning, Ali.

Attached to the message is a meme picture of a dog having a bad hair day.

I laugh out loud. He texted me; I never thought he would. He, is the guy who—. Oh God he. He was there when I gave birth in the car, and Officer Cameron Bailey saw everything.

Mum tilts her head as she studies me from my lounge room floor. She is placing the toys on top of the Jumperoo in the correct place.

    I return to my texting.

    ME: Isn't he cute!

The dog in the picture, I mean.

CAMERON: This is me most mornings. Ha ha.

Is he calling himself cute or is it the hair?

ME: Are you always so hairy? Lol

    CAMERON: I have bad hair!

    ME: I like your hair.

And his face and them blue eyes that seem to mesmerise me. He's also the reason I named my son Cam. If he had never shown up on the busy freeway, I don't know what I would've done.

CAMERON: Really? What do you like about it?

Oh God, this feels kinda serious. I use my hand as a fan to cool down my face. This kind of talk should at least happen after my coffee.

ME: You have a lot of it!

CAMERON: Really? Most girls like the curls ...

    Yeah, I like them too.

ME: I can see the appeal!

    CAMERON: You can?

Now I've put my foot in it.

CAMERON: What do you like about me?

Oh no!! I'm not telling him.

How weird is this? An all-out gooey feeling spreads through my body.

CAMERON: Have you gone all shy on me??

CAMERON: Well, I will tell you what I like about you!

    Please, someone kill me now!!!

CAMERON: You're strong. I like that.

Now I have a picture of myself looking like Popeye.

CAMERON: Your smile lights up your whole face.

    Aww, that is so sweet.

CAMERON: I'm sure you have bad hair just like the meme.

ME: Okay, that last text is a low blow. My hair isn't that bad.

CAMERON: Completely off topic. I have booked a table for two at one of the restaurants on the boardwalk for Tuesday night. You like Italian, right?

ME: Yes, I love Italian. ;)

CAMERON: Did you just wink at me??

'Who are you texting, Ali?' Mum demands.

A burning sensation fills my whole face. 'What! Oh ...ah ...no-one,' I stammer and place the phone on the table.

'Your face says it all.' She grins as though she knows that one secret no-one else does.

'Please Mum,' I smirk; I can't help the smile that is stuck to my face. Picking up my phone, I walk into the kitchen and text Cameron. Jeez, I'm twenty-two, and as much as I don't mind my mum being here helping me, I don't want her watching constantly over my shoulder.

    ME: Maybe.

Placing the phone down on the kitchen Island, I nip at my bottom lip and wait for his response.

'It's a man—, isn't it?' Mum calls out from the lounge room. I look up and watch Mum. She picks up Cam and takes him into his bedroom.

CAMERON: I would like to see you wink at me in person.

I stifle my scream with a hand over my mouth. I can't help but laugh at this text; a whirling sensation erupts in my body and it reminds me of being a giddy and foolish teenager.

Mum pops her head out of Cam's room to see what I'm laughing at.

My cheeks burn as I close my mouth shut and try to calm down.

Mum crosses her arms over her chest and raises an eyebrow.

    My phone buzzes in
