Chapter 1
Elektra’s keys tumbled to the stones at her feet, forgotten when she saw him, the shock of his sudden appearance going through her like a lightning strike. The slowing clicks of her heels receded, as pedestrians flowed around her like creek water around a stone.
He looked deceptively relaxed. Looked like he wouldn’t take no
for an answer. He looked—like her salvation.
Propped against the wall of her Bourbon Street shop… his powerful arms crossed oh so casually…was the only man who could turn her blood to fire. Utterly motionless and bathed in the vaporous incandescence of the sign, he looked like a bronzed god—in khaki.
Lust was a swirling molten need, headed straight to her core. That volcanic all consuming need had always had a name… Cass McKay.
He wore his standard knee length Patagonia khakis, the hair on his arms and legs gold dusted from the sun. Her gaze roamed over him, from the way the lightweight linen shirt draped his chest to his trim hips and muscled calves. She remembered well the long hard length of his body against hers; her fingers twitched to sift through his tawny sun-streaked hair.
Awareness returned and she edged closer to him, noticing for the first time the appreciative stares of women, young and old.
From his relaxed posture, anyone who didn’t know Cass would think him oblivious, indifferent, but blue eyes that glittered like the gems he hunted, were locked on hers, devouring her from four feet away.
Hey, beautiful.
His voice was a rough gravelly version of its usual silken timbre. He looked as if he’d gone weeks without sleep. Dark circles lined his eyes, deeper than when she’d seen him last.
She knew exactly when that was—one year ago. Make that eleven months, twenty-six days and… she tapped the answer on her thigh—six hours.
She also knew what he’d been up to since they’d parted, not that she’d been keeping tabs. New South Wales was not so far away when it came to the opal community, and their mutual contacts in the industry seemed to think she needed to be informed. They said he was on the trail of a rare blue-black. What was he doing here?
Cass McKay was highly esteemed in his field. They’d met four years earlier when she’d showed up at a dig in Campos Borges in Southern Brazil and again last year when he. The opal disappeared and Elektra hired Cass to find the gem. The last thing she’d expected was to fall for the gem hunter.
Cass,
her voice caught as she drank in the sight of him. She licked her lips, and desire flashed in his eyes. Elektra felt like a woman parched from a long trek across the Sahara only to find an oasis appearing suddenly in front of her. Her mouth was as dry as that desert.
He looked so damn good. Her hand splayed over her stomach to stay the traitorous little pheromones jumping up and down, crying, Yippee, Cass is here.
He was the last person on Earth she had expected to see. I…thought you were at Lightning Ridge.
She gave herself a mental head slap. Mistake. Big mistake. She schooled her features into a mask of indifference.
Cass’ smile softened the lines around his eyes. I was. Now, I’m here.
One golden brow rose, You keeping track of me, sheila?
His Down Under hat tilted as he eyed her up and down.
Cass didn’t try to hide his pleasure. His pulse sped up taking in the sparkling midnight dress that hit her mid-thigh and clung to every luscious curve, You’re looking...
hot, mouth-watering, drop-dead beautiful… untouchable, smashing, sheila.
Cass watched her chin rise, her shoulders straighten. A gauntlet flung down at his feet; he’d been waiting for it—craved it.
Elektra Charpentier was the toughest, most frustrating, most alluring woman he’d ever known. He loved her with a passion that rivaled her obsession for her precious opals.
She was like Meth, and like any addiction, when the substance wasn’t available the withdrawal was hell. That’s where he’d been for the last eleven odd months—in Hell. He’d let her down, and she’d broken his heart; sent him away and like a wuss, he’d stayed away, hit the turps, licked his wounds. But now, he intended to win her back, and he had the perfect bait.
Standing nearly eye-to-eye, it seemed she’d just come from one of those fancy shindigs in her five-inch heels. His gaze strayed to the gentle swells where the fabric draped provocatively to her waist. Heart pounding, he spotted the perfect fire opal pendant nestled over her heart.
You kept it,
he breathed, lost in memories, desire, and regret…
Perfectly manicured fingers rose to her mouth... waiting, but he needed to play out his hand. Keeping his voice even was as hard as his donger, and rather than ask what was on his mind—what party she’d been to, and with whom, all he said was, Business is good, I hear.
Her shoulders relaxed. "I’ve been invited to put Beauty on display at the Metropolitan..." Her voice trailed off.
So, he’s been keeping track as well, Elektra thought with satisfaction but she was determined to deny the heat racing along her limbs. She wasn’t known in professional circles as the Ice Queen for nothing. Squaring her shoulders, striving for nonchalance, she tossed her hair, but forgot it was in a sleek French twist. Several strands escaped their pins and before she could stop herself she lifted a hand to smooth them.
Stop,
Cass said, as he crowded his big, steely body into her space. "I love that haughty don’t touch me look. He chuckled,
Don’t bother denying it, sheila. I know you too well."
His warm breath traveled past her ear and he moved even closer, the fabric of his shirt brushing her nipples and making her shiver. Your body sings for me.
She felt that unique vibration, like the tug on a divining rod then her mouth was just beneath his. Close, so close. Her tongue flicked over her dry lips and touched his. His ragged intake made her realize she’d closed her eyes anticipating his kiss, but when she opened them, the fire in his eyes was at odds with his soft words. Are you going to let me in, Elektra?
Let him in… In her mouth? In her body? In her life? Her name on his lips was the most erotic thing she’d experienced in a year. She shook herself. They were breath on breath. She let out a long, bemused sigh.
He stooped down
