About this ebook

Angels in Cowboy Boots, a novella, is an award winning story. Two years ago Sarah Bentley lost everything except her faith and it teeters in sync with her hesitant steps. Now a chance encounter with four-year-old Matt and his uncle, Dave McKeever, brings hope for the future with a job, a wonderful new place to live, and...dare she dream?...love.
Active outdoorsman, Dave McKeever, battles the instant attraction between them believing God can’t possibly want him to marry a woman held together by titanium joints and steel rods when he needs a capable, athletic mate. Though God’s love brings them up out of the valley of pain and death, can they trust Him not to thrust them there again?
A heart warming story of recovery and romance.

What Readers Are Saying: "An amazing story of a young woman who lost everyone in her life and spent years trying to overcome her own physical injuries. And along comes Matt, a lively 4 year old who never lacks for a topic of conversation. This was a great story of a young woman who was physically impaired in many ways, but her shining spirit made her strong. Between Sarah and Matt, Uncle Dave had no choice but to open his heart and let love in. SQ Eads has the unique ability to allow her strong male characters to be loving men with a deep faith in God."
"I loved it! I really enjoyed the wonderful way that God used the darling little boy to bring the couple together, but what touched me the most went a little deeper. The story was about loving someone, loving someone with imperfections and weaknesses beyond their control, loving someone that wasn't perfect! How refreshing!"

    Chapter One

A crisp October breeze skimmed across the small lake, tossing Sarah's auburn curls and drying the steady stream of tears flowing down her pale cheeks. Bright gold, orange, and burnt umber leaves grabbed her attention as they swirled and skittered across her path, playing leapfrog as each new gust of wind shot them into the air, only to fling them in a heap seconds later. Very much like her life, Sarah decided. It was indeed in a tangled heap, a mess of decisions piled one on top of the other. That's the reason she'd come to the little park across from the hospital. She was determined to sort out the chaos of her thoughts. It was imperative that she plan her future. Yet here she stood swamped once again by the painful events of the past. Would she ever be free of the agony and bitterness?

Today would have marked her fifth year of marriage to Paul and their son's third birthday.

Lord, I thought I had given all my hurt over to you, but I can feel the anger welling up inside me again. Why do I keep asking WHY? I know in my head Why isn't important, but my heart screams for answers.

Her slim body trembled as a sharp pain arched from one temple to the other just as the lightning had pierced the black sky that dark, rainy night almost two years ago. Memories pounded her like mighty fists, leaving her heart and soul battered and bruised. The screech of tearing metal and the soul rending silence that followed still echoed in her ears. Sarah shivered. The twisted automobile, grotesque in the flashing lights, had been a cocoon of death for the baby son she had often cradled in her arms and the handsome young husband beside her.

Everyone said she was lucky to be alive, but of what worth was life if the good health to enjoy it was gone; what value did life hold if there were no loved ones with whom to share it?

Lord, you left me with nothing.

However, only this morning the doctors assured her she had cause to celebrate. Her two year long battle for health and mobility was at an end. It was a small miracle in itself that she could walk the short distance from the hospital rehabilitation center to this quiet oasis in the center of Boston's busy medical complex.

With great care and not a little pain, Sarah lowered herself to a sitting position on the ground near the lake's shore and laid her cane   that detested but still essential object   at her side. She slowly drew up her knees, wrapped her arms around her denim-clad legs and wearily rested her head on her knees. Idly she picked up a small pebble, rolling it around in her hand as she battled the anger and frustration that continued to plague her. The pressure within threatened to consume her.

I can't stand anymore. The thought ricocheted off the chambers of her mind as she flung the rock into the choppy, blue water.

Sarah grimaced as she thought how surprised the doctors and hospital staff would be if they could see her behaving with less than her usual cheerfulness. She was certain they had no idea how much it cost her at times to maintain a happy front. Well, she was past pretending right now. She was drowning in a sea of indecision. Her imminent release from the hospital, the only home she had known for two years, had the effect of making her feel alone and cast adrift. It was time for her to chart her own course and steer her life in whatever direction she might choose. She had no one to answer to, no family of her own and Paul’s parents had severed any connection with her when they buried their only son.

What about you, Lord? Why are you so silent? I really need some direction here. I 'm incapable of swabbing the deck, much less piloting the vessel of my future.

Her gaze was suddenly drawn to a tall man some distance away. Strength and power emanated from him as he stood in animated conversation. Now he wouldn't have any trouble directing his future. Broad shoulders squared as he tapped his hat against his leg and shook his head in disagreement. No, he wouldn't have any difficulty in planning goals and reaching them successfully. He looked as if nothing could stand in his way that he wouldn't face head on and conquer.

There was a time, Sarah reminded herself, when she too could conquer the obstacles of life, a time when she wasn't overwhelmed by the mundane, day-to-day responsibilities of living. In fact the challenges of setting up an apartment and finding a job would have sparked excitement in her. Now, its only effect was to dampen what little energy and motivation she could muster. Once more tears filled her eyes and spilled onto her cheeks. As she had so often in the past, Sarah closed her eyes and prayed.

Lord, once again forgive my anger. I know you won't forsake me and I know you have a plan for me. Strengthen me and direct me, please. Your Word says you will meet my every need.

Moments later a gruff little voice spoke next to her. Howdy.

Surprise jerked Sarah's head up and she found herself looking into big blue eyes in a round, pink cheeked face. Dark curls caressed the brim of a black cowboy hat and gently brushed the collar of a miniature denim and sheepskin jacket, left open to reveal a bright red and blue plaid western shirt. Crisp, new denim jeans covered the short legs and allowed the toes of shiny, black boots to peek out under the hems.

Before Sarah could speak, a tiny hand reached out to wipe a lingering tear from her jaw and her young companion asked with concern, "Did
