In the last suspenseful book of the Winnebago County Mystery Thriller series by Christine Husom, AN ALTAR BY THE RIVER will send chills down your spine. Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department receives a tip off that a man is on his way into town to sacrifice himself. Sergeant Corky Aleckson responds to the call and starts an investigation that leads her into the one of the darkest and most sinister cases she’s ever experienced. Not only is the department responsible for finding the man before it’s too late, but they have also uncovered a hidden satanic cult who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets safe. In the midst of everything, it also appears that a previous case that involves an accidental shooting may be a cover up and not exactly accidental. Can the officers piece this puzzle together before the Altar by the River claims its next victim? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Chris truly has a talent. She is masterful at merging details together at just the right times. In my opinion, this story is not only captivating and compelling, but gives off a disturbing vibe. I don’t have much experience where cults are concerned, but the author did a eerily successful job at delving into the mysterious world and pulling her readers right along with her. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a good mystery or who is looking for a fantastic story line to follow. As I mentioned previously, I’ve never purposefully set out seeking a mystery/thriller, but having read this series, I’m enthusiastic about expanding my preferences. I don’t think anyone would be disappointed with these books and urge you to take a look for yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books in this series. I bonded with the characters. I felt like they could leap right off the pages. I will continue to follow Christine Husom in her career as a writer. I feel that she has a promising future and look forward to reading more from her. It is my highest hope that Christine is currently writing the next segment to this fantastic series. In the meantime, I will miss Winnebago County.

Book Title: An Altar By The RiverAuthor: Christine HusomPublisher: Second Wind PublishingISBN: 9781935171331Reviewed by Michele Tater for Review The Book“An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.” ~Buddha When Gregory Trippen make a pleading call to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department about his missing brother, its sets in motion a ball of evil. Gregory's brother Jeffery is on his way to the county to sacrifice himself at a place he calls Satan's Alter. Hidden underneath the seemingly close knitted police department are secrets and cover-ups that will soon come to light. One of their own may be leaking information that could jeopardizes their very lives.Sergeant Corinne Aleckson who has lived in this county she works for all her life begins to realize that there are things that are happening right under her nose that she would never imagine there. The horrific situations of Satan worship and its victims it creates comes before Corinne's unprepared eyes. Digging deeper she discovers a twenty year old murder that seems to be the source of every thing may be the key to solving the many mysteries surrounding the county.Although this is the third book in Christine Husom's Winnebago County Mystery Thrillers; I have not read the others, I found that is was not a factor in reading this book. The reader is able to follow the story without having to know the background information that may have been given in earlier books.I found it refreshingly unpredictable in it plot, which left me guessing with each passing chapter of what would happen next. The book gives an interesting glimpse into the lives of people who have survived the abuses of possible rituals done by Satan worshipers, some even developing a separate personality to keep them safe. The whole concept of the worship of Satan, I found eye-opening and makes me wonder if there are such things going on without anyone knowing, behind closed doors, in your neighborhood. Great book the I would recommend to any reader, who enjoyed a good mystery that follows a likable character, who is easy to relate to and wish the best for. Warning: readers maybe so engrossed in this book that dinners may be burnt, laundry may not be washed and sleep may be lost.
