    Chapter One: About the Author

    Gloria Naylor, the author of the book, was born on 25th of January 1950, in New York City. She was brought up in a middle class community in Queens. However, her family had originally come from Mississippi. Hers was a comfortable middle-class family.

    During the Great Migration of African-Americans from rural southern communities to big industrial cities and towns, her parents had migrated from the South.

    The Women of Brewster Place was the author’s debut novel. It was published in 1982. The book describes the dual cultural inheritance.

    Most of the characters in the novel have been inspired by the real people the author had come across during her life. The characters have been transplanted from their home community in the South to the unnamed modern city. The story revolves around this basic subject.

    Naylor received her bachelor’s degree in literature from Brooklyn College. Having graduated from the college, she began to take fiction writing very seriously.

    She had been taught to respect and love the classics of English literature by her parents and elders.

    She was an avid reader and she had thoroughly studied the works of Faulkner, Dickens, Baldwin, and Ellison, however, Naylor felt that in those works she did not finds the stories that showed her own experiences as an African-American woman.

    She had been raised with a specific tradition, but she needed to break with the tradition. However, she needed a model through which she could enable herself to present her
