Chapter 1
In the city of Levantine there once lived a man. He was a wealthy man. He wore golden chains around his neck, and he had gold rings on his fingers. He had slaves, and a manservant named Medark Nod. He owned a construction business, a grain mill and two brothels. He was also a money lender with stiff interest rates. His name was Barteloc Strathin. He had murdered his wife for her money before she could give him any children, and he never remarried. He also inherited the construction business, which she in turn had inherited from her late father. The brothels he had acquired after his wife's tragic murder. He had cried and weeped at her funeral, lamenting the loss of his beloved wife. Barteloc Strathin was not without acting skills.
Barteloc had made sure that Medark was treated better than
