    Chapter One: Introduction

Nisa by Marjorie Shostak was first published by Harvard University Press in 1981. The book is subtitled The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman.

The book brought a lot of name and fame to the author. She was born in Brooklyn, New York. She successfully completed her major course in English Literature as an undergraduate.

Marjorie came across her future husband, Melvin Konner, at Brooklyn College. She went with him to the Dobe region of Africa, in 1969, where Melvin was doing his doctorial research.

Marjorie Shostak did not have any training to become an anthropologist, but her visit to Dobe proved to be highly inspirational and encouraging, and it, in fact, proved to be the first step in the creation of a text that is now widely regarded as a classic in that field.

She was a highly talented photographer and a musician. With the help of her artistic skills, she enabled herself to document the artistic output of the women of the !Kung tribe. (It is noticeable that ! in !Kung signifies a tongue click in the !Kung language.)

The author worked very hard and learned and practiced the !Kung language. With the passage of time she was able to speak that language very proficiently.

Having learned the language, Marjorie Shostak started to conduct interviews with the native women of different ages and experiences from different areas.

Nisa is one of the real women the author meets. She has given her the pseudonym Nisa. Shostak is particularly attracted to her because she is highly articulate in telling stories. Her method of storytelling is highly emphatic. She has her very serious and often tragic life experiences.

Shostak meets Nisa fifteen times for interviews when she first visits Dobe. During her second trip to Dobe, in 1975 and 1976, she meets Nisa
