Chapter 1
*****************************************************************************
I thought that you were dead.
Talbot Eames' words returned to Jackson Kendall as he stared in the mirror, splashing his face with cold water from the porcelain pitcher. Jackson ran his fingers over the day old stubble on his firm chin. He could stand a shave but it would have to wait. Jackson was due to start his shift in less than 30 minutes and he was a stickler for being on time. He blotted his face with a large pearl white towel then resumed dressing, his blue green eyes wholly serious as his gazed fixed again on the thin silver scar creasing his left arm, the scar caused by a bullet meant for his heart.
Death had been close enough for him to feel its breath but Jackson was grateful that he hadn't been sealed in its clutches that day. It hadn’t been his time to pass on.
It was hard to believe that two years had passed since that unforgettable gunfight. At times it felt like it had just happened yesterday. Three lawmen had been killed that day and several outlaws too. Jackson was wounded badly in the exchange of gunfire, bleeding profusely from the bullets that had pierced him several times. He was close to losing consciousness when his friend and fellow ranger, Wes, loaded him on his horse and headed for help.
The first home they arrived at was Harriette Morton's. For the next week, the midwife watched over Jackson night and day until they could fetch the doctor, who was in the next county over at the time of the incident. Dr. Reese proceeded to remove the three bullets, one in Jackson's arm, one that grazed his right leg and the one near his heart. If the bullet in his chest had lodged a mere two inches lower, Jackson would have been a goner.
Then there were terrible infections which eventually subsided but the wound in Jackson's arm had lingering complications. Since the muscle had been compromised, it took months of grueling exercises before he could move his arm without sharp pain or limitation. Once he recovered, Jackson promptly departed for Corinth, Colorado, intent on arriving home for a much needed reunion, only to learn when he arrived, that his parents were gone and his sisters were all married, living far west. He discovered that his sisters Livy and Claire were in Montana and his favorite sister, Maddie, was married to a rancher in River Oaks, Oregon. He could scarcely believe that both his mother and father had both passed away unbeknownst to him.
I received a letter from Maddie just last month. She's married to a fellow by the name of Luke Jessup. She has a stepdaughter and now a baby boy.
Talbot was only too happy to share Maddie's address with Jackson, the only son of Arthur and Constance Kendall.
When his father had died, Jackson had been on assignment tracking a jewelry theft ring from Amarillo all the way to the state of Vermont. It had taken a year before the ringleaders were apprehended. Then the ambush by the Massey outfit happened, near the Louisiana border. The Massey gang had robbed stagecoaches, trains, banks, committed larceny, robbery even murder. Then an informant had advised the Texas lawmen that the local bank in Toledo was due to be robbed. That morning, several rangers lay in wait.
Unfortunately, it was a trap.
It’s a setup,
Bob cried out, just as
