    The author answers many common and some uncommon questions prospective teachers have. He uses interviews and stories from teachers about their experiences, expectations, and surprises they had during their first year of music teaching.On finishing the book, I am surprised how many issues the new teachers had to face and solve and how poor the support from parents and administrations.I was going to pass the book on to a college freshman starting her path to music education but decided not to. It leaves me feeling that the first year music teacher is in for a very difficult adjustment, but that most can get past that and ultimately be happy with their career.Much of the book drills into the reader to focus on what counts for you and the kids you are teaching. Following that route seems to require considerable deviation from techniques the new teacher expects to use. For example, considerable time and effort needs to be spent on non-teaching things such as scheduling practice sessions in a multiple use area which requires personally moving aside cafeteria furniture every week, spending hours talking to parents, choosing music that not only will benefit the students but that the parents expect to hear...The author is a good communicator.The new teachers all survive that first year and become effective teachers and the author helps them through the many hurdles they encounter.
