About this ebook
Defeat and Civil War-- King Henry VI, Part 3 opens with Henry and his queen on the run after losing the First Battle of St. Albans. York goes to London and sits himself upon the throne. King Henry then negotiates a truce with York that leaves Henry on the throne, but disinherits his own son and will transfer the crown to the Yorks upon his death. Angered by this, Henry's wife Margaret abandons him and declares war on York. Whose hand is that the forest bear doth lick? Not his that spoils her young before her face. Who scapes the lurking serpent's mortal sting? Not he that sets his foot upon her back,

William Shakespeare is the world's greatest ever playwright. Born in 1564, he split his time between Stratford-upon-Avon and London, where he worked as a playwright, poet and actor. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway. Shakespeare died in 1616 at the age of fifty-two, leaving three children—Susanna, Hamnet and Judith. The rest is silence.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5WS is now, in his fifth outing, a better writer than at the start of his career. The play is tighter, and the characters have real individuality. The bulk of the Wars of the roses end with this play, a lot of the initial players in this "Game of Thrones" are dead, and the country is a mess. The duke of York dies, and his son Edward takes over as King Edward IV. Henry VI is dead as well. Richard of Gloucester is on his way to being the monster of Richard III, and Margaret of Anjou is sent off to France in exile. I've recorded it as read three times.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A truly brilliant bit of writing, particularly for Shakespeare's earlier years. Parts I and II were almost worth sitting through to get to it. Now York's sons are players -- Edward, Rutland, George and the poor maligned Richard. Margaret of Anjou is a poisonous presence, Henry VI fades into the woodwork and treachery and murder abound. York's death speech, complete with paper crown, is brilliant. Warwick and George are constantly changing loyalties and Richard begins the scheming that will blossom into out-and-out villainy in his own play.
