Prologue
The wind blew faintly--rapping subtly upon the antiquated windowpane with the tip of an old weathered maple branch. Rebecca drifted out of her dream, realizing no one knocked at the door, but that her favorite reading tree just yielded to a breeze. Tap, tap, tap it continued, urging her to fully awaken even though the room still nestled in the blanket of twilight. Strange whispers floated in the air for an instant before disappearing. The hairs instinctively rose on the back of her neck, and she reached up, smoothing them.
It's not even close to dawn,
she grumbled, shaking her head of the strange sounds. She glanced at the clock and rolled over to cover her head with the thickness of her pillow. But still she heard the rhythmic tap, tap, tap, and now lay wide awake as her wonderful dream of dancing in the wind faded away into the night.
She frowned with disappointment. She definitely needed to trim that tree soon. She rarely escaped into the oblivion of an enjoyable dream and usually awoke frightened by bombarding nightmares of her estranged husband.
The same basic scenario repeated like a needle stuck in a record track. Charles relentlessly chased her to inflict some horrid abuse, and try as she might, her feet weighed heavy and lethargic unable to aid her in escaping harm. Sometimes, if lucky, she would jolt awake before capture. However, most times it ended in utter failure. She would cry out fearfully, and only the flutter of her startled, frightened heart would yank her out of the nightmare realm.
She admonished herself for dwelling on such morbid thoughts. With a flip and kick of the quilt, she now stood at the side of her bed, stretching and yawning then glanced down longingly, ready to hop back in but once again tap, tap, tap. Groaning with frustration, she pattered clumsily toward the window. If necessary, she would open it and break off the damn tip of the branch...it would do for now.
She impatiently knocked the long brown hair out of her eyes and tugged at the window, but it stubbornly refused to budge. The effort would be worth it to end the tapping and return to sleep. After several grunted tugs and a teeth-rattling creak that sent shivers up her spine, the window finally gave. With a little muscle, she gradually raised it and reached out to the branch. But she touched nothing…
Full moonlight illuminated the tree, and clearly it could not reach to her window. Her fingernails tapped at the sill while she pondered this mystery. It just couldn't make it to the house; even a gale wouldn't have made that tree bend far enough to tap on her window! Rebecca furrowed her brows. What could have ruined such a rare moment of calm sleep if not the tree?
As she stood before the open window pondering the possibilities, a nippy breeze wrapped around her, enfolding her in icy embrace while goose bumps quickly shot up
