Henry Arrives at Christmas
I first met Henry on Christmas Eve sitting beneath our Christmas tree in the midst of gaily wrapped presents. He was a large, furry, brown, stuffed dog who had one chubby paw resting lightly on a large, silver-wrapped present and his other paw raised as if waving to me. His back was supported by an upright wooden sled with bright red runners, and his feet rested gently on numerous small presents papered with little red Santas driving green reindeer across a powder blue sky.
Santa sent him to me as my very special gift, though at the time I didn’t realize exactly how special he was.
Most families open their presents on Christmas morning, but we did it differently. On Christmas Eve we first went to church, then on our way home we drove through the streets looking at all the bright, colorful Christmas lights on trees, doors, porches, and roofs. We’d see lawns filled with lighted Santas waving jolly greetings, reindeers prancing, toy soldiers marching and Baby Jesus lying on straw, all taller than I and all so happy on this special night.
Once we arrived home we gathered around the dining room table to eat a wonderful dinner. There were special candles on the table and my father took pictures of everyone sitting at the table or standing by the Christmas tree.
