The Titian-haired beauty, provocatively attired in halter and shorts, a heavy riding crop under her arm, swaggered up to the ditch just outside the main compound. Two men were digging, their heads just above ground level. Red triangles sewn to their striped uniforms indicated that they were political prisoners, sentenced for crimes against the Reich.
One was an elderly Austrian priest.
Look up!
commanded the woman.
They kept on working, their eyes deliberately averted. Even a glance at this woman, the wife of the commandant of this concentration camp, meant a severe beating – and frequently death.
With a cruel laugh she picked up a handful of stones and pelted the prisoners with them.
Look up!
she ordered again. Look at me!
The younger of the two shook his head. It is forbidden,
he muttered.
She laughed again, shied a small rock at his head. It struck him on the cheek, drawing blood. The old priest stopped work, raised his head and looked contemptuously at her.
Jezebel!
he spat.
In fury, she lashed him across the face with her riding crop.
Then she began to rain blows indiscriminately on both their heads, screeching, Dogs! Filth! I’ll teach you to respect your betters!
Her shouts brought the SS guards on the run.
They looked at me lasciviously!
she panted. They made licentious remarks!
Wielding heavy truncheons, the guards fell on the two unfortunates and beat them until they were bleeding. Then they went to work on the senseless bodies with hob-nailed
