Preface
Truth is stranger than fiction. A friend reviewed this book and commented that she thought that I should have described a different technique for waking the frozen ones, but the methods of freezing and unfreezing described in this book, is exactly how the Nazis did it according to my research.
This story is told in the first person by a fictional character who was raised in the tough Italian district of New Orleans’s French Quarter during the early twentieth century. Realistically, such a character would have used less than correct language, so I hope that readers will not be offended by this realism. In keeping with this theme, history buffs will appreciate the fact that this story is intertwined with real historical facts.
Acknowledgments
Special thanks to my very good friend, David Cado, for allowing me to use his name for the main character. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a Cado associated with the Mafia.
But just in case there are some Cados in the Mafia who aren’t happy with this book: my name is not really Darryl Breland, and I don’t live in Mississippi.
Thanks also to
the flying car company for permission to use images of their flying car.

Introduction
2046 AD
All rise!
The crowded courtroom followed the bailiff’s instructions. Three judges entered the room and took their places. Johnny Cado couldn’t help but think how strange it was that all three judges were women—and one of them was black and one Hispanic. In his time, women couldn’t even vote, and blacks couldn’t drink from the same water fountain as whites. He could only imagine what Adolf Hitler would think about this.
The prosecutor was a bald, German-looking white man who had done most of the talking thus far. His attorney, the court-appointed public defender, was a young black man who had yet to object to a single thing.
The media and other observers returned to their places in the pews where they had sat before the recess. The audience included high-ranking officials with Homeland Security and the National Defense Council.
The bailiff led Cado to the witness chair. As he approached, the wireless transmitter under his skin signaled to the court’s computer network his identity and the list of charges, which were displayed in the high-definition 3-D hologram for all to see.
The prosecutor reminded the press corps that some of the information that would be presented could affect national security and that since the nation was in a state of war against terrorism, the government would have to approve all content before it could be released to the public. That announcement was for show. The government has full control over the media and censors everything that citizens hear, read, or watch.
Once again, the defendant’s memory was accessed via the Life Enhancement Monitor (LEM), a microchip implanted at the base of his brain. The judge instructed the court clerk to program the LEM to perform the necessary stimulation—pursuant to Statute 432c, article one, section 201—to give the government the power to control a person’s thoughts and to access a person’s memories, all in the name of national security. The LEM’s electrical impulses triggered the part of the brain that put the defendant, Johnny Cado, into a state of semi consciousness, inducing a euphoric feeling that made him able to speak clearly, but also ensured that he could only tell the truth when asked a question. The images from his memory corresponded to his testimony and were simultaneously broadcast, like a motion picture, for the court to see and hear—it was the perfect truth serum.
The prosecutor instructed Cado to begin his testimony where he had left off prior to the court’s recess.
Chapter 1: The Awakening
Everything was dark, black, and deafeningly quiet. I don’t recall having any dreams or stirring in my sleep until something aroused my consciousness. My first thoughts were that something was out there in the dark wilderness. I was floating above the earth but slowly sinking toward a dense forest. Something was drawing me down to earth.
There it was again. Something made a sound—maybe it was a foot stepping on a twig. No. Someone said something. Then suddenly, a rush of cold; I hadn’t felt anything before, still floating on a cloud in a sea of dark.
What was out there in the dark forest, stirring around? Was that a twig snapping under someone’s foot? A colder wind blew over me. I began to shiver and to dream that I was lying naked on an ice plain with a forest in the distance. I couldn’t move. I wondered if those were wolves that had noticed me. I felt cold and vulnerable.
The sound was getting closer and becoming clearer. The closer the sound got, the colder I became. Then I heard a woman‘s voice ever so faintly calling to me from the dark: Giovanni.
I felt the rush of cold air again, but it was now much colder, shockingly cold down to my core.
Then I heard a distant voice calling out to me: Johnny…wake up.
Yes, I was certain of it now. Someone familiar was calling my name through the darkness. The cold became unbearable, but then I started to feel something else. Something warm was against me, providing some relief from the bitter cold. Yes, I felt a body, nipples pressed against me; I began to feel aroused.
Giovanni, please wake up.
That voice! I recognized Angila’s voice. It was my sweet Angila’s voice calling out to me from the deep, dark wilderness. Each time she called out, I could hear her better, but I became progressively colder at the same time. I became aware that I had been dreaming and that she was trying to wake me. I began to stir. Then I heard her say clearly: Johnny. I love you. Giovanni, PLEASE wake up for me, Angila. I need you.
She alternated using my name given at birth with my Americanized name, not certain which one I would respond to best.
My eyes opened slightly and I could see a faint light. I wondered where I was. I could feel Angila on top of me, making love to me. I was terribly cold, but the sensation of being in her felt better than ever before despite the painful cold that I felt all over. I thought at first that we must be in our bed at home in Paris, but in response to my first movement, she lowered the blanket, exposing our heads.
Oh my God, can you hear me? Johnny, please tell me that you are all right,
she said with a great deal of emotion.
The sudden exposure of my head to the cooler air shocked me enough to make me open my eyes wide. The bright light hurt my eyes, so I quickly closed them again. Angila was still on top of me, kissing my face over and over and whispering into my ear: Wake up! I love you; I need you.
I was enjoying her lovemaking despite the terrible cold. It was sheer ecstasy. I lifted my arms for the first time; my hands felt her back and ass, and I let out a groan that corresponded with my climax.
Johnny. Can you talk to me?
Yes,
I whispered.
With that response, I felt her entire body shaking and she began to weep almost hysterically. Despite her crying, I could hear her thanking God for saving me.
In time, I became more alert and began to look around, my eyes still adjusting to the bright light. In between each blink I caught a glimpse of our surroundings. Nearest to the bed was a large, red, glowing heater that blew hot air directly onto my face. I could also feel warm air blowing onto the back of my neck and hear the buzzing of a heater’s motor coming from behind me. With a great deal of effort, I lifted my head a little to see past the heater and saw a nurse wearing a white lab coat. My vision became clearer with every blink. There was someone beside me, and behind her! I looked in the opposite direction and saw others.
Instinctively I said: What the fuck?
We were in
