About this ebook

En’Daria is on the run from an unknown enemy, aided by a pit fighter and a cyborg hybrid she isn’t sure she should trust. While she grows closer every day to Croe’ix, her attraction to Tyn-Hy the Cold leave her confused. She wants him. She’s wary of him. She’s enchanted by the glimpses of vulnerability she sees in him, but also senses the danger hidden beneath his emotionless façade. Ominous dreams and erotic interludes with her traveling companions leave Daria wondering if she’ll return to Endiku with her heart intact.
Tyn-Hy the Cold has never been this disturbed in his remembered existence. He worships at the altars of Logic and Emotional Distance, yet from the moment he sees En’Daria, things begin to change. When the princess’s enemy offers him the one thing he wants, it seems a logical choice to get closer to En’Daria to gain her trust before he ends her life. But between a highly protective Croe’ix and the strange feelings En’Daria stirs in him, he will have to decide if bonding with them both is worth giving up his quest to discover his past and, instead, look to the future.

Note: This is the second book in a four-part serial. This book contains strong sexual content between consenting adults such as anal play and male/female/male ménage scenes.

    Dedication

I have to give special thanks to Lea Barrymire for not letting me quit when life, the flu and stress seemed destined to destroy my confidence. Best. Mistaken. Identity. Ever!

I also need to give thanks to Grace Bradley for bearing with me through various delays due to the aforementioned crises.

Syneca Featherstone and Shauna Kruse are as always some of the most talented ladies I know and my covers wouldn’t look nearly as good without them!

Thank you to Frederick Wingate for providing such picture perfect inspiration for Tyn-Hy!

And major thanks to all of my readers. You’re the reason I put words to paper, the reason I don’t have myself committed when my characters decide to start chatting in my mind while I’m taking a shower, and why I hope to continue doing this for years and years to come!

    Chapter Eleven

    Planet Panu

Zysiss, former captain of the deceased Browei Prime Minister’s guard, paused outside his leader’s chamber, sweat slickening his face as he worked up the courage to enter. The delicate tentacles that constituted his hair gently caressed his cheeks in an attempt to soothe his agitation and his gills expanded to draw in more oxygen-rich air, but it did little to calm him.

Even through the door to Supreme Leader An’Vari Del-Tal’s, he could hear her cries of pleasure. She was a powerful leader, the queen of one planet and the Prime Leader of another, but as with most commanding beings, she had flaws. Not that Zysiss would ever speak of them out loud. He liked having his skin unblemished and smooth. Those who dared to speak their true thoughts around An’Vari were inevitably killed in some horrid fashion. It was known on all the worlds she ruled that Supreme Leader An’Vari practiced some dark sorcery.

In a time when technology ruled, there were few species remaining who could call forth magic and most of them were born to the power. An’Vari was not one of those beings. She was Endiki, but she’d sold her soul for the magic she now wielded with relish against all who attempted to defy her, making her one of the most terrifying tyrants in the Ara-Andromeda Galaxy.

Not for the first time since being promoted to the position of the Supreme Leader’s guard captain, Zysiss wished he hadn’t accepted the post. Yes, it meant more credits for his family back on Browei, but it also put him—and his loved ones—in danger of being eradicated on their capricious leader’s whims. And bad news, like what he was about to deliver, could lead to An’Vari calling for one of her torture celebrations.

A male grunt, most likely Jouark’s, sounded through the door. Zysiss shuddered. At least he didn’t have to pleasure Empress An’Vari. She only chose Vortician or Panunian males to consort with, not liking the sensation of Broweiin skin against hers. Since her first husband had been Broweiin, Zysiss didn’t understand how the great king had survived as long as he did before dying.

An’Vari was a demanding lover and frequently went through several guards a night, taking two sometimes three at a time and leaving them twisted with pleasured pain. Some even whispered that An’Vari was a sex demon, drawing life from her partners and it was that which had killed each of her husbands. Zysiss didn’t know if that was true, but considering how her three husbands had gone from vigorous, strong males to weakened shells of their former selves, he couldn’t doubt claims either.

When he heard Jouark’s harsh pants, Zysiss gently rapped on the door, waiting until he was bade to enter before daring to open it. The scent of sex was heavy in the air as was the briny hint of tears from the young Panunian female who huddled in the corner of the massive chamber.

Supreme Leader An’Vari lay supine in the center of her bed without a care for her nudity. Even Zysiss, who wanted nothing to do with her sexual deviance, couldn’t help but admire her beauty. She was an attractive Endiki, until you spent more than a galactic hour with her. Then it was easy to see the corruption in her soul. Hair the same shade as the Golden Trail fanned out around her head, shimmering like stardust on the deep red silks of her bed. Skin several shades lighter than her hair gleamed with good health. All in all, An’Vari looked like the glittering jewel any kingdom would be pleased to have at its center, but she was a poison to any male who took her as his own. And she’d taken, and lost, three males from different worlds. Worlds she now ruled with a brutal ruthlessness that wouldn’t allow for any dissension.

She didn’t acknowledge Zysiss, instead waving a languid hand at the Panunian female. Get rid of her. I grow tired of her weeping.

Jouark said nothing, although the set of his massive shoulders spoke volumes to Zysiss’ mind. The big Vortician wasn’t happy with his duties and when he leaned over to hold a hand out to the much smaller female, his expression was gentle, but it was one he made sure An’Vari didn’t see.

Ah, he has feelings for the Supreme Leader’s lady-in-waiting.

What a pity. The Supreme Leader, as she wanted to be called once she had completed the task she set before herself, would never allow one of her many attendants to intermingle with her guards. She was a very jealous leader and was vicious to any female who took the attention of the males she considered hers.

Jouark led the weeping, shaky Panunian from the room, his stony face creased with concern, his great leathery wings nearly wrapped around her. Zysiss saw the moment An’Vari realized her favorite toy was being overly protective with another female because a look of intense hatred crossed her face.

Jouark, she called out, bringing the seven-foot-eight guard to a sharp halt. He turned, sweeping one of his wings out to block the sight of the female from the queen’s sharp gaze. Her smile was dark and dangerous, making Zysiss shiver with dread. Have the female brought to the dungeon. She displeases me.

A sharp cry sounded from the Panunian and for a moment, Zysiss thought Jouark would refuse the order. But he, like so many, wouldn’t go against the leader who was colder and more dangerous than any outlaw to circle the edge of the galaxy. The Vortician’s jaw tightened, his gray skin darkening to charcoal before he nodded shortly.

Still, his hold was gentle as he led the hysterical female from the Supreme Leader’s chamber, the door closing softly behind them. Zysiss stood frozen for a moment, his natural instinct to camouflage himself to disappear into his surroundings and slip from the room. He didn’t want to be the bearer of bad news, not when Her Supremacy was already unhappy.

But her gaze flicked from the closed door to Zysiss, freezing him in place. Captain, she purred as she flung her arms over her head in a full-body stretch. What news of my niece? Have the assassins finished the job those two idiots couldn’t?

Belatedly, Zysiss bowed, staring at the floor. His three hearts beat in rapid unison, the sweat on his face beginning to trickle down his neck, soaking his crisp palace uniform. Your Supremacy, he stammered. The Star Striders have canceled the contract and the Iron Scourge has deemed the payment far too little for the job.

Silence. Wretched, dangerous silence filled the room until Zysiss was certain he could hear a baw squeaking in the next tower. Droplets of sweat fell from the tip of his snout to land on the floor with little plinks of sound as they came into contact with the hard stone. He waited for her to chop off his head with the sharp edge of her ceremonial sword, but nothing happened.

The assassins have refused to fulfill the contract, she repeated in a soft tone that did nothing but make Zysiss’ tentacles wave with dread. Why?

The— The Star Strider’s Guild Leader stated a mistake was made during their attempt to secure the princess in a cave system. Several assassins were killed and it was discovered the system was the home of one of their most honored members.

And the Iron Scourge? Surely they could give two galactic fucks if my niece was with another assassin. Her words were cold and razor sharp, causing Zysiss to flinch.

They tried to capture the princess before she reached the assassin’s base, he mumbled, his webbed fingers clenching and relaxing behind his back. He could almost feel the shackles around his wrists as he hung from one of the dungeon’s supports. She was going to kill him for this. The princess had a protector with her, a different one, who took out the entire squad of Iron Scourge assassins sent for her. They want triple the credits to complete the job.

    A protector? Who is it?

Zysiss’ tentacles undulated around his head, betraying his inner terror. My men asked questions around Odus Keri and discovered one of the champion pit fighters left the station with a young female. We believe Princess En’Daria hired him to lead her off-world. Somehow they secured the aid of the assassin and left the asteroid only a few galactic hours ago. The Star Striders believe he will fulfill the contract obligations, but they will no longer attack en masse.

The moisture in the room seemed to disappear. For most beings, it would have just been uncomfortable, but for a Broweiin, who needed moisture to regulate their body temperatures, it was painful, deadly. Zysiss’ gills fluttered wildly, trying to bring in more moisture, but none was to be had.

Look at me, she demanded and Zysiss hastened to obey. The dark glow in An’Vari’s blue eyes explained the reason for the sudden lack and his beleaguered body shuddered with the knowledge he was going to die unless he could reach his water injection.

Except his arms refused to move.

An’Vari sat up in the bed, swinging her legs over the side and standing. She was taller than him by several inches, a height she seemed to savor as she stalked closer, her golden hair trailing behind her like a bridal train.

Tell me, Captain, she purred as she stopped near enough that he could feel the magic thrumming off her body. "How has my insipid niece managed to secure not
