Prologue

Angus lowered his high-powered monocular and reached out to run his fingers through his partner’s short, dark hair, squeezing him lightly on the back of the neck. There might be a more professional way of getting Jason Barnes’s attention, but Angus loved to throw him off balance. Stakeouts were as boring as watching golf, with being locked up in a small apartment peering out a window for eight hours a day excruciating. At least the current case had led them to an enticing woman.

What is it? Jason turned to him, his eyes almost electric-blue in the glow of his computer screen.

Angus would have missed the brief flash of arousal in them if he hadn’t been watching for it. It had been months since he’d tasted Jason’s lips and while Angus understood the other man’s need to keep everyone at arm’s length, he refused to give up on the chance at a future with him.

Jason had been on the fast track, moving up the proverbial ladder inside the DEA. His ability to narrow his focus to solve a puzzle and spot patterns most agents missed had been a priceless talent to the organization. That narrow-minded obsessive tendency also had an opposite effect; Jason happened to be completely obtuse when it came to personal relationships. Not that he lived like a monk, but Angus had been half in love with him for years and apparently, Jason had no idea.

Jason kept his relationships short, without any kind of commitment, so Angus had been intrigued when he caught Jason gawking at surveillance photos of their suspect. Staring at a photograph of her sitting at the kitchen table in the morning was much more personal than digging through her computer search history. He knew if he mentioned it, Jason would only deny the truth and then recite some regulation regarding personal affairs and suspects.

Angus broke the spell with Jason’s beautiful eyes, returning his attention on the building across the street She’s filling out a questionnaire for a dating site.

That doesn’t fit the information we have on her. Can you see which site?

The woman, Amadora Romero, glanced around as if making certain she wasn’t being watched, giving Angus the opportunity to zoom onto her computer screen. Very interesting.

The website’s named 1Night Stand. The questionnaire she’s filling out is lot of work to simply arrange a fuck date.

Do you think that’s where she’s finding her mules? Jason’s rapid taps on his keyboard filled the silence when they stopped speaking.

We don’t have any solid proof that she’s involved, let alone the one behind the smuggling. Angus continued to watch Miss Romero as she typed. I wish I could get a better look at the questions and her answers. She’s fucking gorgeous. If she’s not involved in this, I say we try to get to know her.

Because, seducing a potential witness isn’t going to compromise a year-long operation.

You, my friend, are getting far too cynical and jaded. We have no solid proof she’s behind anything.

Just give me time. I bet I’ll find some.

Jason’s keyboard didn’t stop clacking, and it wouldn’t take long for him to dig into every aspect of their subject’s life. But, where he focused on cold, hard facts, Angus specialized in analyzing human nature and habits. His gut told him she wasn’t their prey. Jason didn’t completely believe in instinct, and because of that, he and Angus complemented each other well, but needed the perfect woman to balance them. The more Angus watched Amadora Romero, the more she fascinated him. He had no intention of turning his back on so much natural chemistry. Hopefully, in the end he’d get to explore it with her and Jason.

Chapter One

Amadora stared wide-eyed at her hotel room door, clutching her hands to keep them from shaking. She couldn’t believe a simple knock could send her into a bundled mass of nerves. The butterflies fluttering in her stomach in anticipation of the evening had turned into dog-fighting pterodactyls, while she debated the intelligence of her current position.
