Prologue
The convening Seelie court filled with faeries from all over the realm that had arrived either to cheer Lukh on or vilify him. Descendent of the powerful Tuatha De’Danann, his standing was, as of today anyway, a prince, but the power to judge all acts of disobedience, including royalty, was Queen Titania’s. The King, Oberon, was seated with her but his part was merely in support of the hearing. As it should be, the Queen had the final word on matters of non compliance with the Rules of Glamour.
Since the ancient days of war had ended, the Tuatha had moved to the Sidhe, the underground hills and mounds that covered the countryside. Many tales of good relations with the faery world existed; they were known to do good deeds and help mortals. But over the centuries it became apparent that there was a need to define what could not be allowed, with respect to mortals. Thus, the creation of the Veil. It defined the rules concerning the interaction of faeries and mortals and separated the parallel worlds between them. This was exactly why Lukh found himself in the center of a faery circle facing the King and Queen.
The Tuatha were a tall beautiful people. They shimmered with light and were blessed with many talents. Some sang or played music, so beautiful that when heard on the wind would make mortals weep. Some were strong and excelled in battle. They were the good faeries, as opposed to the Unseelie court of evil faeries.
The Veil determined the extent the faeries could use an enchantment to spell-bind a mortal. All of the Tuatha faeries had glamour: the shinning brightness that intrigued; the magnetism and sexuality that radiated off their bodies. Controlling it was vital for good relations with mortals. That was the purpose of the Veil. Glamour enchantment was not allowed beyond friendship levels. To cause a mortal to lose their conscious awareness and be physically overwhelmed by erotic sexual pleasure was forbidden. The rules were exact. The sentence was banishment to a place for repentance. A place put under magical wards, invisible in the reality world of mortals.
A one thousand year sentence and then, we’ll see,
she said.
The Queen’s words were not a surprise. With a whisk of her wand, Lukh found himself in a battered and run-down hovel out in the Irish countryside.
Part One
Chapter 1
Miss, I’m sure we can find something more suitable for you.
Kevin O’Reilly, sweating profusely, was fumbling to extract a handkerchief stuffed in pants too tight for his corpulent body. He was distressed over the American’s interest in this crumbling shambles that had fallen into disrepair years ago.
Where did she find out about it? Never would he have offered it through either his Real Estate Agency or other advertisement! As he saw it, someone should complete the near destruction that had occurred long ago; and just raze it to the ground and start over. It was a disgrace to the pristine Irish countryside, a rub to the tourist minded locals, and a nest for who-knew-what-nastiness resided inside the walls. Miss, did you hear me? I know of places much better than this dump!
Megan, transfixed by all she saw, faintly heard him. She stood entranced in the sunbeams that stole through the curtain-draped windows pooling at her feet. Stepping closer revealed an enchanting garden lush with flowers, greenery and an amazing tree. And lots of temptation to procrastinate, she thought, knowing that battle all too well. Shifting her gaze, she was pleased the simple interior provided a comfortable recliner that would be a perfect place to cozy up as she thought her way through writing her new novel. And the compact little kitchen area contained all she needed: a coffee maker, table and two chairs. It was exactly what she had hoped for.
Whirling around with arms outstretched and palms upturned to encompass it all, Megan declared, I love it, I must have it Mr. O’Reilly!
But Miss, I need to disclose…
Nonsense!
No negatives, Mr. O’Reilly. You know we Romance writers need peace and quiet to write happy ever after novels. Flinging an arm around the room she said, This is just the place to write a masterpiece!
He looked so doubtful that she smiled and winked to soften the tone she had used.
There was something about her. He shook his head and clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth in the age old reaction to being faced with simple-mindedness. It was not just the messy black curls she tried without success to swipe out of those flirty blue eyes, and not how utterly determined she was to discount good advice, a flaw which he attributed to most women of his acquaintance. No, maybe it was the hint of Irish heritage combined with that spunky attitude. Imagine, she just winked at me! A bit fey, perhaps?
The paperwork done and the key in her hand, Megan ushered the still muttering agent to the door and bid him safe journey on the long lane back to town. Another benefit, she thought, as she eased into the wonderful recliner. Enough distance from town to deter well wishers and do-gooders. Looking more closely at the key in her hand she marveled at the intricate metal work of the handle. Interesting glyphs and symbols, probably Celtic. She mentally filed it away to check its meaning when she had some extra time.
In the silence, she cast her gaze around the room and again felt its essence slipping into her: the feeling of welcome, of comfort. Ahhh, she sighed. Memo to Megan, a trip to the market in the morning for some wine to properly celebrate this wonderful find!
Hello Mel, I’m here and settled in.
Finding a café that served good coffee was wonderful, but the caramel roll had her eyes rolling to heaven in ecstasy! For another bite she forgot Mel was on the line, so caught up in the perfection of a coffee and caramel union. At his insistent repetition of her name, Megan replied, Yes, yes, I’m here. I’m almost ready to send the proposal for my new book out. I have a few more details to work on and you should have it in a week. Mel, the one I’m currently working on is nearly finished and it’s going to be one of my best! I can feel it coming together. Bye, bye!
Returning all of her attention to the delight of caramel and coffee, Megan ran through her shopping list, anxious now to get back to work.
Loaded with supplies and slightly out of breath on the walk back, Megan reminded herself of past unfulfilled plans to exercise, and once again, promised herself to start---when the book was finished. Noting the qualifier, she grimaced.
It was a beautiful morning, and she quickly decided that she would work outdoors in the shade of that glorious tree. She gathered up the essential writer’s stuff and grabbed a blanket, but before starting, she
