    Dear Reader,

    I have finally typed out what originally was written after the events I will describe in this short and hopefully humorous read. I mention humor only because I realize that the event in 1995, Hurricane Katrina, was devastating and people did lose their lives and possessions, however my experience and what I disclose should not be seen as irreverent. It is my experience as the day unfolded and should in no manner be seen as disrespectful to those that suffered greater than I.

    Two weeks ago I woke up in a damp, sewage-soaked child's bed that was tilted at an angle of 30 degrees or so. Not too bad of an angle to be sleeping in it, but just enough of an angle to remind me that I was in what was left of my niece's room, in what used to be a family home's second floor, in Waveland, Mississippi. Oh...and the smell was a helpful reminder as well. What a name for a town that in a matter of hours was washed away by waves into the Gulf of Mexico.

    This is my story: Swimming With Katrina, written shortly after leaving Mississippi.

    I gather my thoughts today in another state, freshly showered and comfortable drinking coffee far away from the site of Hurricane Katrina's devastation. The news coverage of
