    Dedication

For my one true love who helps me deal with my past mistakes!

    Prologue

    The planet Exilla, 42nd Century

Could I hitch a ride with you guys? Ivak asked. I’ve always wanted to visit twenty-first century Earth. I have quite a bit of vacation time accrued with the Agency. If I don’t take my personal hours now, I’ll lose them in the next calendar year.

Shelby scrunched up her nose in thought. An Invisible Man in the twenty-first century? What could it hurt? No one would see him—no one would ever know he was there if he kept quiet in public and didn’t disturb anyone. If he accidentally knocked over something while a stranger was in the room, she could claim he was a ghost. St. Louis was filled with ghosts. His activity would be considered just another haunting.

Yeah, why not? I don’t see any harm in Ivak visiting St. Louis with us. Do you, Quentin?

Harm? He thoughtfully stroked his chin.

Somehow Shelby felt that her lover wasn’t entirely convinced. It really wouldn’t be any trouble. He can stay in my guest room.

Hmm…an invisible time agent in the twenty-first century? Quentin grinned. Why not? Sounds like a safe bet to me.

    Chapter One

Is there any place in time and space where I feel truly at home?

The nagging thought kept bouncing around in Ivak Manstun’s mind for the first twenty-four Earth hours he spent in the home of Shelby Schwartz and her time agent lover, Quentin Takahashi. It wasn’t that he hadn’t been given a lovely guest room. He was currently reclining on a firm, yet soft, mattress on the top floor of Shelby’s renovated townhome in St. Louis and had been afforded every courtesy. Even if the bathrooms and telecommunications systems seemed primitive to him as a denizen of the forty-second century, they essentially were top of the line for their day. The temperature of the summer day outside felt pleasant enough, if not a bit on the humid side. As an invisible being from Exilla, he didn’t wear clothing, so the rising temperatures of North America in the early twenty-first century really didn’t pose much of a problem for him.

Ivak had wanted—no, needed—to take a break from his fast-paced career of being a time agent for some time. His bosses agreed, and he had more than enough vacation days accrued. While Ivak enjoyed the thrill of the chase and establishing justice in the timelines, even he knew his edge was dulling. He needed to recharge himself. After capturing Barris and clearing Quentin’s record, everything had come together and presented him this opportunity, and he’d been smart and grabbed it. Shelby and Quentin were wonderful hosts.

Yet in spite of this welcomed sabbatical from the Time Regulation Agency something made him feel uneasy and unsettled. Something made him feel…lonely.

Well, old man, it’s like your elders used to say, he muttered to himself. "One day you’ll want to settle down in a particular place and a time and, more than anything, find a particular person to settle down with permanently."

Hey, Ivak! Are you up there? We’re going out for some pizza. Wanna join us?

Shelby’s voice calling from the foot of the staircase interrupted his brooding.

Sure thing. I’ll be down in a minute.

Ivak jumped up, quickly pulled a comb through his thick mop of invisible hair and grabbed his stealth towel to sit upon. You could never be too careful sitting on chairs in public places. Human beings of this era were plagued with various diseases and maladies—especially this lot. Shelby told him they didn’t even have access to free public health care in her country, which explained much of the widespread illness. It made his Exillan blood run cold to think how primitive the twenty-first century really could be.

He found his hosts cuddling on the sofa when he entered the living room. Ivak snorted. You two just can’t keep your hands off each other, can you?

"I remember last night you couldn’t keep your hands off me! Shelby laughed. You’re making Quentin jealous, I can tell."

Jealous? Quentin? Not likely! Your dark-haired stud seemed to be enjoying himself with his cock in your mouth while I was fucking you. You sure we’re talking about the same rogue time agent here?

Quentin squeezed her shoulders. Shelby is such an old-fashioned gal. She enjoys fucking my best friend in front of me, but she still wants me to feel as if I’ll always be her main squeeze.

What a woman! Ivak agreed, doing his best to hide the sigh in his voice.

Shelby and Quentin exchanged a look. Obviously the sigh wasn’t lost on Shelby. Hey, why don’t I call Melynda and Val and ask them to come along with us? And I need to stop by the office here as well…

But you just went into the office this morning. Quentin took the nudge in the ribs with grace. Oh, yeah, you need to stop by the office. What’s-her-name was out.

"Sara—Sara Shaw. I’d bet she love to come
