Chapter 1: Preface and basic German grammar
Vorwort (Preface)
This book is intended for English speakers, who want to learn the German language,
The book's author studied economics at the University of Bonn and studied business administration at the University of Applied Sciences at the Technical University of Giessen, Germany
In the early 80s, the author began learning German the elementary level in the Ruhr University in Bochum, and then attended an intensive course for advanced German in a well-known institute, called Okumenisches Studentenwerk
e.V, in the same city.
in the middle 80s I moved to Bonn to attend the Studienkolleg at the University of Bonn. The Studienkolleg is an initial course that a foreign student must absorb before getting an admission in a German university.
Now what is the best way to learn German? First, to attend an intensive course and spend much time studying, reading, and listening German. The best way to practice this language is to live together with people who do not speak your language.
It's great if you have German friends, but they never have time to socialize with people, less with foreigner persons. So I recommend to live in a home for students or live in community (Wohngemeinschaft), ie, sharing an apartment or a house with three or four residents
But to share an apartment you have to be open minded, because it is is not easy to understand the habits and the personality other person. The disadvantage of living in community is that the student will not have much privacy, and there are frictions among roommates, if you are not a flexible and tolerant guy then you have to look for a student residence.
Another important thing, you have to get used to the German food, it can be quite different from the food in your country. The most appropriate and inexpensive place to eat is in the canteens of universities (Mensa), there can eat anyone who looks like a student, of course if you are not already enrolled in a university or college, you have to pay a little more for your food
Now, I'll say a few words about the construction of this book. The English speakers will have some trouble with German language, because the German alphabet has just one pronunciation and it is pronounced as it is written. For this reason the English-speaking student must dedicate more time to the pronunciation and also to the grammatical part, above all, to identify the gender of nouns
The most complex part of German grammar are the declensions, cause they have to be declined: the definite and indefinite articles, adjectives, possessive and demonstrative pronouns, etc., according to the noun gender.
My recommendation here is this, the student must try to understand from begin of the book, i.e., you must understand the grammar step by step, until the end of the book.
An elephant must be devoured by small preys. You cannot devour it all at once, with a lot of motivation and perseverance, you can achieve it. Good luck!

2. Die bestimmten und unbestimmten Artikeln/Definite and undefinite articles
The articles are classified into definite and indefinite. In German the articles have their own particularity. In English there is just a neutral article the
and indefinite articles: a, an. In English all nouns are neutral, but in German is very different and much more complex.
In German a noun can have different genders: masculine, feminine or neuter.
In addition to that if you have a sentence with two or more objects or subject, this sentence can be taken 4 cases: nominative, accusative (direct object), dative (indirect object) or genitive. The endings of the adjectives must be declined, depending on the noun gender and number, the case of the sentences and depending on the preposition that precedes the noun.
There are few tricks by which we can identify the gender of a noun. They'll tell you later.
Generally, the attributive adjectives stand before the noun, while prepositions come before these types of adjectives. According to this premise we have following structure:
Articles/preposition/demonstrative and possessive pronouns + attribute adjective + nouns + verb.
Example: der alter Mann läuft auf die Strasse
In the plural case, the attributive adjectives change their endings, sometimes it changes the noun endings as well. This fact makes difficult the German language for foreign students.
2.1 Die bestimmten Artikeln (Definete articles)
As you probably know, the definite articles are used to identify: gender and number of the noun (singular or plural). The first thing you should learn is that in the German articles will change its form (suffix) according to: gender, number and case.
Please, pay special attention to the stem of the letter d
how it changes it depends on gender, number and cases (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive). It is very important to study this chart, because we
