- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Former lawman Bill Cassara applies his considerable researching skills to the story of Ted Healy, the man who brought the Three Stooges together. I'm a big Stooges fan, and I didn't know much about Healy before reading this book. Cassara does a very good job of documenting Healy's journey from vaudeville to Broadway and to Hollywood, and paints a sympathetic portrait of the troubled, yet seemingly generous and funny man. Healy lived a short, yet full life, and died a mysterious death at the age of 41. Cassara digs deeply into the ephemera of Healy's life through interviews with his few surviving contemporaries, press accounts of the day and other books about and by the Stooges. With the sharp eye of a trained investigator, Cassara doesn't accept rumor as fact, and presents many sides of the events of Healy's life. Some of the writing is a bit dry, and Cassara sacrifices readability to accuracy and documentation, but still the story of Healy is compelling and moving. A good read for any real Stooges fan, and a cautionary tale for those attracted to alcohol and high living.
