Their perspective as non-participants enables them to offer fresh interpretations of the regional and ideological differences that have been obscured in the standard histories and memoirs of the period. John McMillian is an associate professor of American history at Georgia State University. He is the author of Beatles vs. Stones and Smoking Typewriters, the editor of American Epidemic: Reporting from the Front Lines of the Opioid Crisis (The New Press), and a co-editor of The Radical Reader and Protest Nation (both published by The New Press). He lives in Atlanta.
