About this ebook
Rowan is the sole survivor when his entire family is struck down by the plague. Alone and grief-stricken, Rowan ekes out a living by playing music on his button box in the small towns and villages of Prosper. He lives and travels in his family's old caravan, half starved and in despair. One day, he finds he has competition: a young man playing a violin. Rather than make an adversary, Rowan suggests they travel and play together, but he regrets his offer when he finds out that Samik is from the Tarzine Lands, beyond the volcanoes, and is being pursued by a vengeful warlord. And that's not all. Samik also claims to have the Sight—and what he sees (and hears) is Rowan's dead sister, Ettie. As they travel from town to town, they form an uneasy alliance, which gradually evolves into a friendship that will be tested to its limits when Samik is captured.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed reading this book. Like other reviewers, I wish it was a little longer. I enjoyed the characters and the story. It was well written (which is always a plus in my book) and kept my interest though I felt there needed to be a bit more depth to the story. Samik being gay? was totally out of the blue. Holly Bennett has a lot of potential as a writer and I will be looking for future books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5***Spoilers***This was a very good quick read. I loved the characters and the little adventures they went on. I only wish that this was waayy longer....maybe even a series. I wanted to hear more about the characters and spend more time with them. Samik's attitude and Rowan's serious, mysterious nature made for some pretty funny dialogue. I was laughing through out the whole book. And the whole thing with Samik liking Rowan and wanting to kiss him....that would have been fine but I just wish Bennett talked about it more....besides the one time. It didnt really go any where. Some of the reviews said they thought it was for a younger audience...but I have to disagree. There is quite a bit of cussing and some scenes too mature for younger kids. I miss Rowan and Samik...wish I could read more about them. But I liked it and I am glad it is in my library. I will defiantly be reading Bennett's other novels.Favorite Quote: "Crapped myself," Aydin said, "All the way down to my boots."
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Redwing was an okay read. It was a little difficult to get into, but I pushed through. I really enjoyed the story and the characters, but there simply needed to be more. I felt like the ending was rushed, and it shouldn't have been. Redwing could have been much longer and filled with way more details. Yes, it was a good book. But it could use just a bit more of ... everything.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I found it difficult to initially get into this book. Once I was able to get into the book it had some good ideas and characters. I think the plot and the descriptions needed more, but I also think that it was more because the books target was for a much younger reader. I did note that on the book it said tween. I loved the cover of the book. Overall I'm not disappointed that I read Redwing. I would recommend it for a much younger reader.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Redwing has very good bones, but no meat. Bennett could have given more detail about everything, from what Rowan and Samik looked liked, to the two countries they were from. The story also felt a bit disjointed.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was seemingly made for me with my particular quirks and tastes and I certainly wouldn't mind reading many more like it. I was able to put a ridiculous number of tags on it: grief, ghosts, bards, musicians, travelbond (a tag I use for people healing through traveling with each other) and more. There's even a giant slobbery dog. Needless to say, I inhaled it in one sitting. But even though I enjoyed it, there were a couple of flaws I could not overlook. The book is good, definitely, but it's not great. The meat was there, the problem is that there needed to be more. More of everything. Turn the volume up to 12. It definitely could have stood to be double the length, possibly even triple. Nothing much really happens plot-wise (but that's ok as far as I'm concerned; it's one of the things I LOVE about stories like this which are all about the feelings) but still the pacing was uneven. There were several really beautiful, heartbreaking, and evocative scenes, but the connective tissue between them was lacking. I really loved the characters and wanted to stay with them longer but after the climax the ending was really rushed and an emotional let down. In short, yes, I think you should read this. 'You' being anyone who likes fantasy, ghosts, musicians, or stories of healing through companionship. I would love more books like this one, even if they're not perfect.
