Chapter One
Sarah let her head fall onto her arm as she smacked the alarm clock. Nothing would make this day any better. Her best friend, Louise was getting married and the lucky bride and groom were planning their co-ed bachelor and bachelorette parties on a gorgeous Caribbean island.
Great, a girl’s night out. That’s just what I need. Her sarcasm sounded no different bouncing around in her head, than if she had spoken the words aloud.
Unlike most brides who planned a bachelorette party, Louise wanted to travel to another country to have it. And most bridesmaids would be ecstatic to assist in such a grand adventure, but not Sarah. She didn’t enjoy excessive sun exposure and was terrified of flying. All she envisioned of the trip was being strapped down to a seat and the plane malfunctioning, erupting into a ball of fire before it crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.
Oh, joy…
Her body shook as a wave of anxiety took hold, shredding her nerves. She wanted nothing more than to cancel her trip, fake a horrible illness, anything to avoid going. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't convince herself to back out. She loved her best friend and she wanted to be there for her. Thank God her doctor had prescribed her some medication to ease her apprehension. She would pop a pill just before the plane took off and she'd be fine for the short flight south.
Hopefully...
Slipping out of the bed, she rushed through her morning routine, showering and dressing just in time to hear the driver from the car service knock on the door. She sucked in a giant gulp of air, stretching her lungs to capacity.
I can do this. I can do this. I can do this,
she chanted, over and over again.
Opening the door, she released her breath and plastered on a smile that felt terribly uncomfortable and most likely looked awkward. Sighing, she turned back toward the door, and locked up her apartment, while the driver collected her bags.
Sarah's belly churned with acid as they drove to the airport. The sun was about to rise, reminding her that even if she wanted to, there was no way of escaping now. The palms of her hands were damp and her pulse was thick and fast as it pounded in her temples. She swallowed the dryness in her throat. Her nervousness was making her nauseous and unattractively sweaty.
Great. Pit stains.
She reached down and stuck her hand in her front pants pocket. Her fingers glided over the bottle of anti-anxiety medication. Truth was she wanted to pop a few at that second. But she didn't dare for fear of relaxing too much, potentially drooling on herself and looking like a drunken idiot. Once she got on the plane, it would be a completely different story.
After she arrived at the terminal, picked up her boarding pass, and rushed through security, she found everyone already waiting at the gate, their faces exploding with excitement. Sarah wanted to gag. She was miserable and hated rising before the sun. She hated flying. She hated pretending she was happy when she was anything but.
Her life hadn't been the picture perfect one that Louise's had been. She hadn't found her Mr. Right, hadn’t landed a job that made her a success, and didn’t have a perfect model body. Sarah was flawed. She was a mess. And she was alone.
Sarah!
Louise shouted as she closed the distance between them, her arms stretched open wide to pull her into a fond embrace. I'm so glad you're here. I wasn't sure if you'd make it. I remember how much you hate flying,
she rattled off, planting a kiss to Sarah's cheek. I feared you’d cancel on me.
Sarah forced a smile on her face as they separated. I wouldn't miss this, Louise,
she told her, meaning every word and hating herself for it. You're my best friend and I'm happy for you.
Louise giggled, her golden blonde hair bouncing on her shoulders as if she were in a shampoo commercial. Her blue eyes seemed bluer as her face warmed with color. I'm so excited I could pee,
she said, another giggle escaping her. I can't believe we’re going to have a full-fledged weekend on a tropical island drinking and partying like we did in college. This is gonna be the best weekend ever.
Sarah doubted that. She wasn’t a party girl in her teens or twenties. Why would she be in her thirties? I've got the same feeling,
Sarah muttered through clenched teeth and forged smile.
Sarah’s gaze darted to the restroom sign hanging overhead and hoped she’d be able to scramble off to the ladies room and hide, until the boarding announcement came. But it was already too late. A pleasant voice rocketed into her ears, alerting her that it was time to face her worst fear. It was time to board the plane that could burn up on takeoff, crash midflight into the ocean to serve up the passengers as food for sharks, or erupt into a ball of fire on landing. At that moment, she thought her heart was going to burst from her chest.
Damn it, why did Louise have to mean so much to me? Why couldn’t I just be a selfish bitch?
She sucked in a deep breath, hoping it would help her look a lot less terrified than she really was. Louise grabbed her arm and nudged her, making her feet move even though her muscles screamed in defiance.
You can do this, Sarah,
Louise whispered into her ear. I’ll be with you the entire flight. I had my seat reassigned so that I could sit beside you.
She turned to meet Louise's gaze. You didn't have to do that,
she told her, appreciative that her friend cared that much and realized how difficult it was for
