Foreword

When most people think about gout, the only image that comes to mind is that of a limping old man with a crutch and a foot that is heavily wrapped with bandages. This image is a popular one from Victorian dramas and movies set in the era, but the truth of the matter is that gout is a complex condition that affects all types of people.

The American College of Rheumatology reported in 2011 that more than 8 million people in the United States alone were diagnosed with gout. They further reported that the large majority of people affected by gout were men. Going by their figures, about 6% of men in the United States have gout, compared to 2% of women.

These numbers mean that gout is something that you or someone in your family might deal with. Perhaps you know someone who has gout and you want a better understanding of it, or you are in a high-risk group for the condition. Alternatively, you may have recently been diagnosed with the condition yourself and you might wonder what this means to you.

While gout is a serious disease that can affect your life, it is also a condition that can be managed. While no guide can substitute for real medical care, you will find that educating yourself on the condition can go a long way towards empowering you with regards to your own body and your own health.

Learn more about gout so that you can be sure that you are making the right decisions about your body!
