    CHAPTER 1

    THE BEGINNING

Daniel Edmonton glided down the streets of Manhattan’s Upper West Side.  He watched the city slide by in the leather-upholstered back seat of his silver Bentley.  Listening to the strains of Bach soothed him as he thought about his upcoming visit with the Private Eye, Detective Steel Black.

Daniel was a tall man with silver hair at his temples, a full head of dark brown hair belied his age of 55, his skin was smooth but lined with care and the hints of a depression.  He was a widower, who mourned deeply for the loss of his wife, Angelika, who had been murdered three years ago.

It was winter time in New York, a chill 30 degrees Fahrenheit.  He wore a long black cashmere overcoat over his tailored black wool suit.  Daniel was still a very handsome man, but his demeanor caused women to feel sad when they looked at his face because obviously he was a man whose thoughts were already in the next world.

He carried a silver-headed black walking stick, which he used to lightly tap the roof of the Bentley to indicate for the chauffer to immediately pull over.  He had arrived at his destination.

His chauffer opened the door and Daniel stepped out looking up at the building with hope, then came a bit of relief in his mind as he contemplated the architecture of the glass skyscraper, thinking about the man that held his business in such a place.

As Mr. Edmonton rode the elevator up to the 44th floor, he thought about Detective Black.

Detective Black had come highly recommended, and Daniel was positive that he was the right man for the job.  Daniel stepped out of the elevator and looked to the left.  There was only one office on this floor.  A Penthouse Suite.  He walked up to the door that gleamed brightly in the dim lights, gold lettering on the glass door.

    PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

    DETECTIVE STEEL BARTHOLOMEW BLACK

He stepped into the office, and a wave of warm air washed over him, the central heating was very effective in this place, taking the chill off the winter’s day.

A fireplace gleamed brightly in one corner of the suite.  At the front desk sat a very beautiful dark-haired woman.  She stood up as he came in and held out her hand.  Mr.  Edmonton, we’ve been expecting you. She offered him a seat across from the fireplace on a black leather sofa.

The office was decorated in a minimalist décor, tasteful paintings on the wall and only one side-table, a comfortable black leather sofa by the fireplace and a couple of chairs against the wall.

The door to Det. Steel Black’s office door was closed.  Dark wood paneling gave the office a cozy and warm feeling of understated elegance and professionalism.

Mrs. Price, as she had introduced herself, walked up to the door of Mr.  Black’s office and lightly tapped on it.  Then she turned to Daniel and said, He’ll be with you momentarily.

About five seconds later, the door opened.  In contrast to the warmth of the front office, it seemed like a slight chill preceded the door as it opened.  Daniel stood and walked into the darkened office.

    Whereas the front office had
