This book by Candice Ransom tells the well-known story of Little Red Riding Hood with adorable illustrations by Tammie Lyon. I really loved the book and the pictures as well. In the classroom setting, this book would be perfect for teaching students about strangers and discussing with them what their options are if they were to be approached by someone they did not recognize or felt uncomfortable around. The way Ransom words the story is simple and would be easily understood by children.

In Little Red Riding Hood, Red is instructed to bring a basket of goodies to her grandmothers house through the woods. The wolf notices this, and beats her to her grandmothers house, eating the grandmother and posing as her in her stead. After a number of clues, the wolf reveals himself, and tries to eat Red. However, the wolf fails, and Red is reunited with her unharmed grandmother (who was swallowed whole).

This is a good book to teach children that there are actually bad people out there and you should not think that every person is a nice person. I would read this book to my students when they are learning about bad people.

In Little Red Riding Hood, Red is instructed to bring a basket of goodies to her grandmother’s house through the woods. The wolf notices this, and beats her to her grandmother’s house, eating the grandmother and posing as her in her stead. After giving a number of clues, the wolf reveals himself, and tries to eat Red. However, the wolf fails, and Red is reunited with her unharmed grandmother (who was swallowed whole and not chewed). The message of this book is that one should be cautious and aware of their surroundings; especially in the woods but even when in a friend’s house one shouldn't ignore blatant threats, like the fact that Red’s grandmother was suddenly larger, covered in fur, had massive teeth, and looked suspiciously like a wolf.Reading Level: K-3

This version of Little Red Riding Hood has LRRH as a sweet little girl who adores her cape out of love for her grandmother. She knows better than to go off the path, but she makes excuses for herself. This version is nonviolent (LRRH ducks the wolf and lets Grandma out of the closet), but the pictures don’t quite match the story details.
