    This Is Who I Am

    ––––––––

The following story is true, so if you find it boring, please do not blame me. Blame reality. It is a story that takes place in what is undoubtedly the greatest city in the Midwest: Chicago. Friends, I know what you are asking yourselves: what am I, George Shetuni, a bona fide Columbian, doing in Chicago? Well, my older brother, Brandon is a resident doctor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. You know what this means, right: it’s time to party!

On this particular trip, as I arrived in Chicago, I was expecting to have a bad time. Honestly speaking, my mom and I came to Chicago to help my brother move. And as we discussed the move, my mom and I often mentioned an Albanian saying: Why do they invite the donkey to a wedding? To do work, of course; I can’t imagine a donkey taking part in the festivities. Likewise, on this trip, there was an undertone of work. But at the same time, or rather unexpectedly, I should say, I often times found myself in an agreeable mood.

The entire trip was not fun. For example, can you imagine arriving after a seven hour bus ride to a dark, scorching hot and humid apartment without any air-conditioning? Well, that is the exact situation my mom and I found ourselves in at my brother’s place. My brother, Brandon opened the door with a none-to-enthusiastic look on his face.
