    Gideon - Matt Morton

    LESSON 1

    A Hero for Dark Times

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

    JUDGES 21:25 (NLT)

BRUCE WAYNE GRIEVED over the violence and crime that had corrupted his home, his beloved Gotham City. It had claimed countless innocent victims, including members of his own family. As a child Bruce watched in horror while his parents were ruthlessly murdered in front of his very eyes. Many years later, having inherited their vast fortune, Wayne transformed himself into the ultimate vigilante, on a mission to single-handedly stamp out injustice in Gotham. Batman, also known as the Dark Knight, roamed the streets by night and enforced his own brand of justice on thugs and mobsters who dared to prey on helpless victims. With the use of high-tech weaponry and advanced combat tactics, Batman was more than a match for any criminal who would dare to challenge him.

The story of Batman continues to capture hearts and minds, both young and old, because we would all love to be like him: a self-made hero who, by virtue of his strength, wealth, and intellect, fights for truth and justice in the midst of a dark and corrupt world. Batman is the ultimate American hero. He rescues people in need but never needs to be rescued himself. Stories about strong, independent heroes appeal to us because we want to possess that same kind of strength.

This Bible study focuses on the story of Gideon, a man who found the strength to be a hero when his nation desperately needed one. But Gideon’s strength came from a very different source than most of our modern-day heroes like Batman. In fact, Gideon’s life could not have been more different from Bruce Wayne’s. Unlike Batman, Gideon was weak and insignificant. He didn’t come from a wealthy background, and he had no special military training. But God gave him the strength for an unbelievable mission: to rescue his people from a powerful and enormous army. He was just an ordinary guy whom God used to do extra-ordinary things. The time in which he lived was evil, and the problems the nation faced seemed impossible to fix. But as Gideon’s life proves, the strongest heroes emerge in the darkest times, and the weakest men are often the ones God uses to accomplish the greatest tasks.

    THE PORTRAIT OF A HERO

      1. When you hear the word hero, what sort of person comes to mind? What character traits and abilities make a person a hero?

      2. If you had the power to be a superhero, what would you set out to accomplish for yourself, your family and friends, and the world?

    • For myself

    • For my family and friends

    • For the world

    DARK TIMES

The book of Judges begins immediately after God led the nation of Israel into the land He promised them. The people had experienced amazing victories, such as the conquest of Jericho (see Joshua 6). Judges 2:10-23 tells the story of what happened when the first generation who entered the land grew old and
