    After a long absence, novelist CJ Baxter returns to his hometown of Adelia in upstate New York for his grandfather's funeral.       Although this book comes from a Christian publisher, it has it all: drinking in bars, infidelity, violence, dysfunctional families, and a helpful Catholic nun. I predict that it will be too much for some evangelicals, but those with a broader mindset will no doubt enjoy the book. The story revolves around author C.J. Baxter, who is called to his hometown in remote upstate New York for his grandfather's funeral. He has been gone basically since he went to college, and he is now around thirty-five. His marriage has gone kaput, and he doubts his ability as an author. The welcome he receives from his family is not exactly the warmest, and things go downhill from there. I thought the book started off kind of slowly, but it ends it has lots of suspense at the end. Still, it was not quite the page-turner it might have been. If you have the opportunity, I would recommend it as a good suspense novel to read. It's probably not one that I would have chosen had I not won it in the Early Reviewers giveaway, however.

      The concept was intriguing, the main character believeable, and the climax worth waiting for. However, I did feel this book still needed a lot of editing, as well as some work in the character development. It seemed to flit over several characters without really giving enough insight into who each of them really was and how they related to CJ. Not sure I would quickly pick up another Don Hoesel given the opportunity.

      Don Hoesel's first novel, last year's Elisha's Bones, was a workmanlike effort in a genre that has been overworked in the CBA marketplace, that of the search for the supernatural artifact. It was a fine, albeit standard, thriller.His second work, the upcoming Hunter's Moon, shows a great leap in craft. This is a much subtler novel, more akin to a mainstream literary work than the standard fare offered in the Christian publishing world. I am encouraged that Bethany House has taken the steps to publish a novel that does not fit the standard CBA mold in terms of its setting, plot, and overall feel, and hope that its publication will lead other houses to expand their offerings.Not to say that the world that Hoesel paints is altogether unique. The main character, CJ Baxter, is a successful author from a politically-connected family with secrets to hide. Both of these worlds, of the author and of the politician, are well-worn, but Hoesel exercises a deft touch in weaving these disparate worlds together. He delivers to us a taut family drama, a story of a man coming to terms with his own failings and the consequences of his own actions.Hunter's Moon moves at a nice pace, slowly building up tension that finally comes to a head in an exciting extended scene that covers the book's final 6 to 7 chapters. The spiritual aspects of the novel are also woven in subtly and without distraction, an accomplishment that many Christian authors would do to learn from.

      This was a good read, not a great read. The ending left me hanging instead of wanting more. What happened to Thor, the dog? What happened with CJ and Janet, CJ and Artie? The characters were as deep as they needed to be but in the end you really don't know how CJ was reconciled to those he forgave. I need a little more detail with what happened after the last "hunting" trip. Other than that, I enjoyed the book.

      The book started slowly and progressed slowly for me until the last 30-40 pages andonly then did it become a page turner. Hoesel's character descriptions made most of them likeable and believable. His descriptions of the small town rang true and I really got a feel for the area. The relationship between the characters was well fleshed out. My quibble is withparts of the plot development. There are holes as far as I'm concerned. After witnessing his brother committing a heinous crime, CJ was so traumatized he couldn't wait to move away and then only returned because his grandfather had died. If this were such a huge event in his life, why was there not more written about the aftermath? I also would have liked to know where his mother stood in all this. We see where she is when CJ returns but there are a lot of gaps in the story that I would have liked filled in.Would I still recommend the book? Yes, I would as I think Mr.Hoesel does have talent. He just needs to hone it a bit. All in all I did enjoy the book but it's a tad shy of being a great book.

      Hunter's Moon captures your attention in Chapter One by endearing you to an elderly man named Artie. The story continues to hold you with a small town life, the story of a successful writer, the memories of a lost loved, the belief of a higher power, a lovable dog and the promise of suspense. CJ, the successful writer, is the center of the story and I as the reader became quite fond of CJ, regardless of his issues. The story held my interest with me asking myself just how ruthless might a family become. Don Hoesel answers it here in Hunter's Moon. A very good read.

      Another great book from Early Reviewers! First my only complaint is that this was presented as a suspense novel and I don't think it really qualifies as that genre. However it was a very good book no matter how you classify it! Hoesel writes a funny yet thoughtful novel. It left me feeling that I should re-read it at least once more because I think there was a lot more that I could have gotten out of it...like I said, a thoughtful novel and thought-provoking as well. It leads the reader to ask questions of themselves that are always good to reflect on. This would be a wonderful book to which to add a reader's guide/book club guide at the end.On a more surface level I have to add that Hoesel writes in a manner that is simply a pleasure to read. His characters are fully human. He is witty in a very accessible way. The faith of the characters is presented in a very realistic manner and I enjoyed seeing it played out in their lives in a natural way. I'd recommend this book to anyone!

      Surprising how many books are listed with the same title!!! I enjoyed this book which was dense with character and with plot. At first I was not sure if the denseness represented richness or convolution, but finally settled on richness.When CJ returns to his hometown after an almost two decade absence, he is both reassured at some of the sameness and surprised at some of the differences.In some ways he slides right back into his old role. In other ways he steps aside and lets the role slide by him.His deerhunting episode with Artie and his enthusiasm for the sport to me was out of character. I was also in the dark as to what happened to his old "friend" Artie at the end of the book. The ending seemed sudden without closure on lots of characters...leaving the reader to decide for themselves what they wanted. I would have liked another chapter or two "in conclusion." It seemed that this book still needs a bit of tweaking.I would read other books by this author. I believe this would appeal to both female and male readers.

      First I would like to say I love this program,,,not only do you get free book(who doesn't like free) but your also get introduced to a new author...and third I can share with my friends.......That said.....not crazy about this book...first the main character would travel over three-four states to get the dog but after everthing they go through at the end nothing more is said about the dog??? For one thing he could spend several days at the vet and is fine....or if did not not make it...we could find out the dog fathered a litter of puppys and he could call it TJ...Thor Junior...(just a throught)...also...where did the helicoper come from(magic)?...and just one more thing......spell check......I will confess I'm not the greatest speller...but check page eight,also page 165,andalso 227... May not be crazy about this book,,,but it did keep me reading all the way to the end....I do want the read Elisha's Bones...sounds interesting...

      This is a book by an author that I have not read before. The character development in the book is really good. And the last sixty pages or so are very exciting. I would have really appreciated it if the excitement had been spread out a little further and that part of the storyline were expanded upon.       This book has an interesting storyline but could use a little more plot and character development. It was an easy read, moving quickly enough to keep you going, but too quickly for the aforementioned development. The author did manage to make me dislike the characters that should be disliked and like the ones that should be liked, so that's an accomplishment. Also the story was believable -- rather a sad commentary on morals in some instances. ;-) I did enjoy reading Hunter's Moon, and its main flaw was its lack of development and the fact that it ended too abruptly, for my taste anyway. Perhaps Mr. Hoesel has a sequel in mind. (?) I would like to have seen more about CJ and Artie. Can't say more because it would be a spoiler. At any rate, reading the book was, all in all, a pleasant experience.
